Chloraprep Rash Causes and Reviews

A Rash is an area of irritated or swollen skin. Many Rashes are itchy, red, painful, and irritated. Some Rashes can also lead to blisters or patches of raw skin. Rashes are a symptom of many different medical problems. Other causes include irritating substances and allergies. Certain genes can make people more likely to get Rashes.

Contact dermatitis is a common type of Rash. It causes redness, itching, and sometimes small bumps. You get the Rash where you have touched an irritant, such as a chemical, or something you are allergic to, like poison ivy.

Some Rashes develop right away. Others form over several days. Although most Rashes clear up fairly quickly, others are long-lasting and need long-term treatment.

Because Rashes can be caused by many different things, it's important to figure out what kind you have before you treat it. If it is a bad Rash, if it does not go away, or if you have other symptoms, you should see your health care provider. Treatments may include moisturizers, lotions, baths, cortisone creams that relieve swelling, and antihistamines, which relieve itching.

My husband underwent surgery to repair an umbilical hernia on 2/10/12, a Friday. He was instructed to apply Hibiclens (which contains the same active ingredient as Chloraprep) the morning of his surgery (which he did). Whether or not it was reapplied by the OR nurses just prior to surgery, we don't know (probably - they had to clean it with something), but by Saturday morning we noticed a Rash all over his abdomen and around his waist, as he had been up all night itching. He is still itching like crazy - tiny zit-like bumps everywhere the Hibiclens was applied. The Rash is spreading, and some of the bumps have 'pus' inside them. Most are just itchy and red. Benadryl has NOT helped. When we called the surgeon, he tried to blame the Rash on Percocet, even though my husband had never before suffered a reaction to that medication, and even though the Rash was 'concentrated' in the areas the Hibiclens was applied. He even stopped the Percocet for a day just to see, and the Rash continues to worsen - so it's NOT the percocet. This is crazzzy...

I had breast biopsy surgery and 3 days later I started seeing red bumps on my chest. They started to go up my neck almost to my chin and the burning and itching did not let me rest. I thought it was the percocet given for pain so I stopped taking it. The Rash continued to get worse. I looked up natural remedies cause the topical Benedryl was not working. I use cooled down Chamomile tea and apply with a cotton pad. Tried olive oil and it worked the 1st apllication only. I'm going to try Aloe next to see if relieves the itch. What's getting me nervous is I just found redness near the incision point.

I underwent surgery on my knee for a torn ligament. Immediately after surgery my entire leg was red and hot. Within 24 hours I developed thousands of flat red spots, with some areas itching like crazy. When I was allowed to shower, days later, I noticed the orangey brown color washing off of my leg. I have a known iodine allergy and this was made perfectly clear. The surgeon told me that he never saw this reaction before. Within a week I went to my dermatologist who did a biopsy to rule out vasculitis since I am known for autoimmune disorders. I was putting topical steroids on the Rash and it lasted for over 4 weeks. The Rash would look more inflamed with any type of heat near the leg or if I had tight fitting pants on. Having that hang over my head for 10 days was very scary because vasculitis can have very serious side effects. And the fear of Lupus and connective tissue disorders and the possibility of having to take chemo drugs did nothing to alleviate my fears of this unknown Rash. After the biopsy I was told that it was all an allergic reaction and no news is good news. But that doesn't allay my fears that this will happen again on my body after a surgery with newer consequences that are unknown to me at this time. I will never rest not knowing. I need to know what caused it and I wish the professionals would listen and be more careful with the products that they are using and double check the ingredients and cautions. Maybe then this would not have happened to me. I will never feel safe in a hospital again.

I had Facet Joint Injections, they applied ChloraPrep to my back on a Monday, by Thursday my back was covered in Red itchy bumps thousands of them, I've been taking Benedryl Tablets and Creams and nothing is working and its Monday and they are still there after a week since the injection and four days after Rash appeared. This is awful. I've never had any reactions or allergies all my 45yrs.

Shortly after my lumpectomy I discovered a Rash that covered from my waist up and parts of my left arm plus a blister. The blister is located next to the incision where one lymphatic node was removed. Found out from my doctor that the Rash is quite common. Chloraprep was used on me in the operating room. Hibicleus cleanser wasn't the culprit as I has used it twice:the night before and the day opf my surgery. I'm wondering how long will I have this Rash. I'm using cetaphil cleanser and lotion only.

1 week after my liver biopsy, I developed a beefy red, hot, inflamed, tense, swollen, painful, itchy Rash on the area where the Chloraprep was used on over 80% of my abdomen. 3 weeks later, the Rash is still red, but dry and peeling. Some areas look bruised. Now I am developing hives on the periphery of the original Rash as well as on my back and neck where the Chloraprep was not used. I wonder when my skin can return to normal! Doctors should warn their patients that this could occur. The Chloraprep was not washed off after my procedure. My instructions were to keep the area dry, avoid washing for 24 hours!!

I had a thyroid nodule biopsy and the skin was prepped with ChloraPrep. Overnight my neck was itchy, but the next afternoon I had a severe Rash all over my neck and chest, with some of the "spots" oozing and inflamed to the point of creating wide swaths of huge red, raised bumps. This lasted longer than TWO WEEKS and I thought I would never stop wanting to scratch it! It required benadryl and prednisone to get it under control.
