A bursa is a filmy-colored sac that protects and cushions your joints. Bursitis means inflammation of one of your bursa sacs. The inflammation may result from arthritis in the joint or injury or infection of a bursa. Bursitis produces pain and tenderness and may limit the movement of nearby joints.

You can get bursitis in your shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, heels and big toe. Injuries, overuse and repetitive stress are common causes of bursitis. Certain diseases, such as arthritis and gout, might also cause it. It sometimes occurs with tendinitis.

You can usually treat bursitis with rest, ice, and medicines to ease pain and reduce swelling. Other treatments include ultrasound, physical therapy, steroid injections and, in rare cases, surgery. Stretching before you exercise, strengthening your muscles and resting when you do repetitive tasks might help prevent bursitis.

Resolved Question: Severe sharp hip pain when coughing, sneezing or getting out of bed too quickly?
Link - Fri, 05 Apr 2013 11:00:17 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Over the last few months I've been getting random sudden sharp pain in my hips/pelvic area after coughing, sneezing or getting up too quickly. It's particularly worse when I'm lying flat on my back in bed. I have no other symptoms & I'm not pregnant. I had an internal ultra sound to check my ovaries for abnormalities or cysts, but nothing was found. The pain generally only lasts 30seconds to a minute, but sometimes it's so severe I almost keel over in pain. What could be causing this? Please help!

Resolved Question: What other reasons can be for joints hurting?
Link - Fri, 29 Mar 2013 21:29:20 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Im 16 and i would like someone to suggest reason for my joints becoming slightly uncomfortable. I do not want to hear arthritis because that word scares me. My elbows crackle and pop quite often and they can hurt a little to lean on, they also get red and get hot. Both of my knees hurt, the pain is no where near severe but there is a tiny bit of uncomfortableness (if thats a word) also my knees do not get hot or go red thats only my elbows. My shoulders hurt but only at the very very anterior its literally just below the skin the pain is, the pain only occurs if I externally rotate something that has a hard resistance. I think ive done this through bench pressing. What other reasons can this all be? I don't want arthritis because when I get older I want to be able to do things like rock climbing, I want to also train to be a marathon runner as well I want to lift weights and get the perfect body. So what reasons could all this be? Please help I want to be normal like other people, please also dont say anything about going to the doctor because I would like someones experience or knowledge on here. Thanks

Resolved Question: My hips hurt when I walk, stand, run etc...?
Link - Fri, 29 Mar 2013 04:04:39 GMT - Email The Author
Description: You know where your hip bones are? In front of my hip bones, they hurt when I walk, stand, run etc... I'm 14, 80-85 pounds and 5'3. I don't know why it hurts. I haven't fallen or bumped my hips on anything. There's no trace of hip injuries in my family. I'm not active (as in i don't run). I don't know why it hurts.

Resolved Question: What's wrong with my hip?
Link - Sun, 24 Mar 2013 20:22:15 GMT - Email The Author
Description: So starting about 5 weeks ago I started getting intense pain in my hip, when I walked it felt like the bones were like crashing and rubbing against one another. I woke up crying and fell back to sleep. It lasted about a week before I went to the ER. The doctor basically asked what he wanted me to do about it. He took an xray and said he can't see anything besides the bone so if it was a muscle issue I'd have to see an orthopedic. He ended up giving me Motrin and that was it. It still hurts extremely bad to this day. I haven't seen an orthopedic in hopes of it going away but it hasn't. I want to make an appointment but I'm always really busy.. I think it was caused by doing a ton of jumping jacks with weights in my hands.

Resolved Question: 22 years old and hip bone pain?
Link - Fri, 08 Mar 2013 15:02:03 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am 22 years old and last night when I went to bed I noticed the right side of my body hurting. I think it is around the top of my hip bone. It's not muscle ache's, it literally is my bone. When I press down on it obviously it hurts more. Everytime I move I can feel it even when I am just walking. I haven't worked out recently or bumped it at all. There is no explanation for why it is hurting. I called my doctor to see if I should wait a couple days to see if it goes away or if I should come in and the nurse said I should come in. Just wondering if anybody has ever experienced this.

Resolved Question: Could they miss blood clot?
Link - Mon, 04 Mar 2013 18:48:32 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm a 41 year old male in good health, no previous medical hx. 5 weeks ago I noticed the vein under my right arm pit very enlarged. As days progressed, anytime I raised my arm above 45 degrees, my arm became stiff and "full". Almost an entrapment of fluid and blood. Veins bulging, and a more pinkish color of the hand. hand. The previous swelling under my right clavicle is now almost completely gone. My arm is a bit achy but no acute area of pain or injury. Saw my doctor and have had an ultrasound to rule out a clot, chest xray was clear, right side CT with contrast showed good blood flow and no occlusions. My doc said he wants an MRI to check for rotator cuff injury. The results showed tendinitis and bursitis. Put on prednisone and swelling greatly decreased. They did however do a D-Dimer last week that resulted in a slightly elevated reading .66 normal being anything below .5. My question is this...... I still have some slight edema in my right hand and arm especially in the morning, no area of acute pain, but the vein in my armpit continues to be somewhat distended and occasionally feel a twinge of pain. Could they have missed a clot? I mean my veins seem to hurt some and something just does not feel right. The swelling in arm and arm getting tighter gets worse with more arm use. Thanks I should add that a specialist said it was probably a brachial plexus injury but was not sure. Thanks Bellinger. Let me elaborate. I initially felt some R arm "fullness" while doing some everyday tasks. I had done some heavy yard work before and used some poor body mechanics. Anyhow, a few days later, my arm had pretty bad edema in the morning which decreased with elevation. I noticed swelling under my clavicle with some broken blood vessels (minor) and a couple very small broken blood vessels on my bicep. So, I go to my doctor's PA who thinks clot. Get U/S and its clear. Few days later more arm swelling and go to ER and they do a CT with contrast which is clean and they cut me loose. Back to my doc, he says rest, ice, elevation, see shoulder specialist. Shoulder specialist says get MRI. MRI says tendonitis and bursitis (subacromial) where swelling was. The give me Prednisone. Felt much better, but not using arm much as more use equals more discomfort and swelling. All the while the vein in my armpit is distended (which has significantly decreased bu There was no tingling or loss of sensation. Also the Prednisone was after all of the negative tests.

Resolved Question: Shoulder extremely weak and painful when serving in tennis?
Link - Sat, 09 Feb 2013 21:02:14 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi guys, Every time I hit a serve in tennis, my shoulder acts up and starts paining. Tennis season just started a couple weeks back, and I have probably only attempted 3 first serves because I'm afraid of prolonging the shoulder pain. However, there is no pain when volleying and hitting groundstrokes. It only pains when serving. I do not think its a problem with my form as well because I'm serving as instructed in many tennis serve videos. I currently use a Babolat Pure Drive GT Plus (can this be part of the problem?) I have experienced sore shoulders in the past with the racket, but its reaching a point where I can no longer bear the pain. Also, my shoulder does not hurt when I lift my arm above my head or reach back with my arm. Does anyone have any ideas of what I may have and how to fix it? Its a Pure Drive Roddick GT + btw.

Use ibuprofen and have a gel but still a bit cranky in places. A little overweight. What else can I do at home? Doctor doesn't do very much. Thanks Hal.

Resolved Question: What are the symptoms of bone cancer?
Link - Sun, 30 Dec 2012 22:25:39 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Not only am I just curious, but I'm wondering if this also applies to me. I have severe knee pain that's gradually gotten worse over the past six months or so. Sometimes everything from the knee down internally will go cold and numb. I can't bear my full weight on my knee, I have to use a crutch, and it's swollen (ice doesn't help). I can tell that when I sit or stand, when comparing my two knees, that my right one looks like it has a lump or buldge thats not supposed to be there. In terms of my overall health, I'v ebeen noticing that I get more headaches/migraines, decreased appetite, CHRONIC fatigue (sleep doesn't help, makes it worse bc of the grogginess), lightheadedness and dizziness upon standing, sitting, just in general; nausea/upset stomach that's not caused by lack o food, and unintentional weight loss. I am 5'5 and I used to be 120 pounds (i'm a teenager, not revealing my age), and I have lost 12.5 pounds since last month (now I'm 108.3). I don't know what to do. I was diagnosed with bursitis and plica but I have been following the doctor's orders and my symptoms only get worse and more frequent. I do think I have a little bit of plica, it makes sense with my whole lifestyle, but neither of the diagnoses are of a severe degree. I'm at wits end. I can't go back to the doctor until wednesday. I jsut don't know what to do. What should I be concerned about? Even if I don't have a bone tumor, what are the symptoms?

Resolved Question: Why does the GOP want to raise the S.S.eligibility age up to "70"?
Link - Wed, 21 Nov 2012 07:30:21 GMT - Email The Author
Description: S.S. - Social Security. Why do they wan't people working and slaving themselves to death on a job? Why isn't the eligible age of 65 not good enough for them? If they cared so much about American citizens as they claim, why not discuss LOWERING the eligible age not raising it? Now THAT would please a lot of citizens because most aren't really trying to be on a job even till the age 65. A lot of people at age 60 for example, have all kind of ailments like arthritis, bursitis, can't sit/stand for long periods a day etc. GOPers (those still wet behind the ears, cough ... Paul Ryan and the like ... cough) who want to raise the age of eligibility to age SEVENTY, obviously don't even care enough about their own grandmoms and grandpops who are griping and counting the days down that they can get the he!! out of Walmart, or Sears, or the shool boy/girl bathroom (janitorial) or the school cafeteria etc, because they want some 'me time", and they want to travel, or maybe they just want to be home tending their gardens and watching soap operas or whatever. They deserve that after working so many years. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50135585n http://www.politifact.com/tennessee/statements/2012/sep/17/scott-desjarlais/tennessee-congressman-defends-vote-raising-social-/

Voting Question: Excruciating hip pain?
Link - Tue, 20 Nov 2012 22:26:32 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Alright, I'm going to try and be thorough as possible! I'm a 17 year old girl, and this morning I awoke around 5AM due to pain in my left hip. I never do get up at 5AM, so it was the pain that had awoken me. I was lying on my left side and when I went to go turn onto my other side, I felt pain. I then moved my left leg and tried to bend it, but came to the realization that any leg movement gave me horrible pain around the inner left hip area. It felt like the pain was coming from the hip joint, because it doesn't hurt on the side. To continue forth, I got out of bed and tried walking normal and at that point, I guess I moved my leg too much because I got a shooting pain that I would rate 8-10 on the pain scale. It was horrible. Immediately after I started to feel extremely light headed and was crying at this point due to the pain. I sat down and calmed down, went upstairs (which was really hard I might add) to wake my parents. I ended up taking ibuprofen, and the pain did subside some but it's still painful to lift my leg. I limped most of my day today, and avoided stairs as often as possible. When I am sitting or lying down I feel a dull ache of pain in my left inner hip area, and when I move my leg the pain is much, much worse. I have no back pain, and the pain is nowhere else besides the inner left hip area. I have also not done any exercising since Friday, and that was running for a half hour and ab work outs. I do sleep on my left side in bed. I also eat relatively healthy. I was researching and a lot of my symptoms point to hip bursitis, but I'm not sure which is why I'm posting here. I'm also afraid to consult a doctor because my family currently has no health insurance, and it would cost a pretty penny. Any tips? Thoughts? Thank you for reading, and thank you for any input. I'm also not pregnant. Forgot to add that in.

Description: Okay so aprox. 5 years ago i got in to a car accedent with one of my friends and i injured my shoulder i dont remember what they said i did to it. Well last september my shoulder started acting up i seen my doctor and they said it was a brutitis ( i prolly spelt that wrong) injury. Well on 10/25/2012 i woke up and went to reach for my water and when i tryed to straighten my arm out and got a sharp pain from the shoulder to my elbow i figured i slept on it wrong so i let it go for the day figureing it would get better well later on that day i tryed to lift my arm over my head and i get the sharp pain and its like hard to move it up and hurts when it touched. well now its 11/4/2012 and the pain hasnt changed its just getting more irritated and is burised even when i sit on my couch and prop my arm on the arm of the couch it hurts when i rest my arm to the side of my body its more of a dull achey pain but when i move it its more of a sharp throbbing pain its legit driving me nuts. I did look up some things and it says it might be a rotator cuff issue or a dislocated shoulder. what do you think could be the problem? Has anyone ever had this issuse? I know noone can like diagnos me off the computer but i just want an idea of what it might be. im a 20 year old female. ill give 5 stars to the best answer.

Resolved Question: left leg, right side, knee pain?
Link - Mon, 05 Nov 2012 21:18:12 GMT - Email The Author
Description: yesterday i was running in the sand a lot, because i skimboard. today i was going to go back out to the beach, but noticed a pain in my knee whenever i lifted my leg, my knee feels fine when i bend it and walk without lifting my knee much. at first i thought the pain was coming from the tendon in the back right side of my knee, stage-right, so my point of view looking down at it. But after further review i noticed it seems to be coming more from the very rightmost bone on my knee a little below the kneecap, kind of where the bone overlaps with the top of the calf muscle. anyways any help would be great if you can give tips on how to make it heal faster and if you know what this might be, i already put arnica gel on it, which seems to help a bit.

Description: I have chronic asthma, fructose and lactose absorption(along with a number of food allergies ie nuts eggs etc...), gastritis, IBS, migraines, tendinitis/bursitis, hormone deficiency, chronic fatigue, arthritis and the list continues to grow. I'm weak and I have zero stamina/endurance. I can't work or study due to the extent of my problems and I'm currently on a disability benefit for all of the above. I'm 30 years old and I thought these problems would have passed a long time ago but as I get older my symptoms grow increasingly more severe. I can't afford to go to expensive doctors I have no money because of all that I have spent on them in the past. My biggest concern is that I have some sort of cardio vascular problem as any type of medication effects my heart rate and blood pressure to the point where my breathing is heavily restricted and i am left unable to breathe without much strain or move from my spot, I have fainted a few times from my asthma medications. This occurs with most types of medications eg. Antacids, pain relief, hormones, anti depressants, asthma meds, etc. So I don't really know what to even ask I'm just finding it so hard to live in this world I'm helpless, so if anyone has advice or accounts of their own please help. Speak from experience only please.

Link - Tue, 09 Oct 2012 04:05:06 GMT - Email The Author
Description: About six months ago I was told I had bursitis in the hip. Bursitis which occured due to tightness in the hamstrings. I went to physical therapy and my PT seems impressed with my progress. So impressed that I only had to go to him for 6 out of the 16 visits I was prescribed. I only experienced pain in my hip/back area for a short time and haven't felt any pain for a few months now since I began stretching. When I had the pain I didn't have any limited motion and still do not. It almost felt like a minor tweak in my hip however my doc still diagnosed me with bursitis. I could still run even with the minor pain but now I am better than ever. I am attempting to join the CG and I meet all the health regulations as far as the hip extensions, abductions, rotations, etc. I was just curious if the fact that I at one time was told I had hip bursitis will hinder my abilities to join the military regardless of the fact that I have full fuctioning in my hip. Thanks ahead of time. I know I have posted about this before but didn't get a reply so I figured I would try again. Just to clarify, I didn't say anything about my problem. I put no on the pre screening due to how minor the issue was. However, my rectruiter knew I was taking an anti inflammatory so I had to send my med records due to that.

Resolved Question: Fell down the stairs! Help?
Link - Sun, 07 Oct 2012 23:52:10 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Okay, so I fell down the stairs a few weeks ago. Luckily, there were no serious injuries. Stupidly enough, I was running down and slipped so fast and hard that I went up into the air for a second, then fell back down on each step very hard. My tailbone hurt for a week or so after that and I was pretty bruised there. My arm slammed very hard on a few steps so there were a few bruises right above my elbow. My back was hurting for a while too, but that stopped. Right now, although better, one of the small bruises on my elbow feel bumpy and still hurt. Everything else has healed except this! Why? :/ Nick: Shutty! xD I'm 19 not 90! lol

Resolved Question: Have you had bursitis in any of your joints?
Link - Mon, 01 Oct 2012 14:09:40 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Right now I have it in my knee and hip. The pain is tolerable but the trying to walk is horrible. I saw a "specialist" that did nothing but charge me $400. My GP gave me a shot of cortisone I guess and I am getting around like a teenager again. What were your experiences with bone problems? Thank you in advance :) Sorry Meer I know the anatomy of the body. I was simply trying to make it simple for other folks that might not know how to explain their pain. Leroy -- its a shame that doctors cant adjust the cost of procedures so people on medicare can afford these necessary treatments. Gosh knows they are rich enough and won't miss a few dollars! Milton -- I have some very good answers here and I see no arguments at all. For me to ask this question is to gain personal information concerning the long term effects of painful arthritis and different medications and treatments used to treat it. I know, like all these other nice folks that I am only at the beginning of this disease and and by talking to others I should be better able to make the choices I need.

Resolved Question: What is causing my hip pain?
Link - Sun, 23 Sep 2012 14:10:03 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I get pain deep in my right side hip joint when I lay on my right side. The pain is not immediate and I can lay on my right side for an hour or more before the pain begins and rolling over on my back or on my left side gives me relief almost immediately and then after about 15 minutes or so I can roll back onto my right side and lay on my right side for another hour or so before the pain starts again. It is a constant ache deep in the hip joint and becomes extremely intense if I don't roll off my hip for awhile. This is causing me a serious problem because I favor my right side when sleeping due to nasal septum deviation which causes my sinuses to close when I lay on my back or on my left side.

Resolved Question: Can trochanteric bursitis get you disqualified from the military?
Link - Fri, 14 Sep 2012 16:17:24 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I recently went to the doctor and was told I have a minor case of trophanteric bursitis. However, I went to another doctor and was told I simply pinched a nerve in my lower back. The pain in my hip was more in my lower back rather than my hip. The pain was only present for about a month then web away then came back briefly. I can still run fine and do everything fine with the minor pain I felt. Ever since I started stretching regularly I've had no pain and even when I wasn't stretching right away I felt fine. I also don't experience any pain on my hip, I don't have troubles getting out of chairs or standing, it was just a very minor pain. I've looked at the symptoms of bursitis and I've only experienced basically one of the symptoms; that being pain in my hip/lower back. Given this info, would I b DQ'd my MEPS to join the Coast Guard? Thanks.

Description: I am a freshman in college and this is my first season of cross country, which is a D1 level. I ran track since 6th grade and started running cross country my freshman year of high school, so I have been running for some time. But this season I was doing good for the first two weeks and then i got hit with injuries. Right now I have costochondritis, which is nflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum), and I also have back spasms. I've been injured before with bursitis in both knees, strained calf, swelling behind the knee, and iron deficiency. I just don't know if I can mentally comeback again from another injury because it happens every year. I get in top shape and then I get injured and I'm out for a while. Its just hard to quit something I love to do and the team isnt a problem. But I really don't know if I can comeback because the costochondritis could take week/months to go away and I already been out for 3 weeks. Help please, I really don't know what to do.

Description: The are in constant pain, it just depends to what extent. My right hip grinds and clocks when I walk and sometimes my left locks which make a loud click with I move it. They've done x-rays and MRIs but they have come back negative. They don't know what's wrong and some think I'm faking...until I have them feel the clicking. What's wrong with them? I'm only 21.

Resolved Question: Could alcohol act as anti-histamine/anti-inflammatory?
Link - Fri, 06 Jul 2012 10:40:02 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I had an allergic reaction to something (not sure what yet, either chocolate milk or premade bechamel sauce) and http://i.imgur.com/QpHYh.jpg this happened. My lip was almost double the size within a few hours of eating and drinking. I had a doctors appointment today so last night I got super drunk to sort of ease the fact that I looked ridiculous, and the more I drank the lip started to go down, unswell, until it was pretty much its normal size. I figured the reaction had gone but when I woke up this morning it was even worse. Anyway, went to the doctor and he subscribed me some pills and after I took them it went back down fairly quickly. So I'm asking if it was the alcohol that made the lip "un swell" the night before? Other wise what would have caused it to go down and then swell back up?
