When your kidneys are healthy, they clean your blood. They also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. When your kidneys fail, you need treatment to replace the work your kidneys used to do. Unless you have a kidney transplant, you will need a treatment called dialysis.

There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Both types filter your blood to rid your body of harmful wastes, extra salt and water. Hemodialysis does that with a machine. Peritoneal dialysis uses the lining of your abdomen, called the peritoneal membrane, to filter your blood. Each type has both risks and benefits. They also require that you follow a special diet. Your doctor can help you decide the best type of dialysis for you.

Resolved Question: I'm a biomedical engineering student and have a question about what types of jobs are out there.?
Link - Tue, 21 May 2013 14:41:37 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am currently working an internship at a hospital nearby where I live. I've been working there for about 12 weeks. All I have been doing is really basic tech work. Like this sort of work I wouldn't need a bachelors degree for it. It would be ok for a starting job but I want something that is more of an "engineering" job. So my question is. Are there biomedical engineering jobs or clinical engineering jobs that are just basic biomed tech jobs? If so what are some options that you can go into that are more challenging and are considered more of an "engineering" job?

Resolved Question: What are some good jobs to have for a person who has Epilepsy and gets seizures almost daily?
Link - Tue, 21 May 2013 00:10:13 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I get them almost daily (once or twice every 2-3 days). I want to have a career though or at least a job I can work and won't get killed or fired from if I have a seizure while on the job. Any suggestions? I'm 21 by the way. I'm good at managing money so I won't have an issue with that. I'll save up my paychecks. I just need a good/safe job for someone who has almost daily seizures due to Epilepsy.

Resolved Question: I'm upset with myself...How do I back out gracefully?
Link - Fri, 17 May 2013 19:18:21 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I feel like a real phoney now, am being judgmental and I have no right to be, BUT how do I back out now? I have a new neighbor whom I don't know real well at all and she is on dialysis for her kidney's. She's needing a new kidney. I'm a caring person, or feel I am and I talked to her about putting an ad in the paper for a transplant donor. I told her I would hepl get it all going. Well, further into the conversation, she's telling me how she loves drinking and hanging at the bars. This is where my judgmentalness came into play....WHY help someone who isn't worrying about what someone else could be giving up to her IF she abuses the new kidney? I have no idea if the doctors would even take a donor if they know she enjoys her booze, but if they do.....I just don't feel right helping her now. I don't know how to back out of my saying I'd love to help! HOW do I back out?

Resolved Question: Random health problems..am I ill? :(?
Link - Mon, 13 May 2013 03:46:35 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Okay so just recently, I've been noticing strange things about my health/body.. Here's what I've found: -I've recently come out in a massive breakout over my face.. But I'm 18 and have had clear skin all my life, even through puberty. -I've discovered random pea sized purple bruises all over my thighs, but they don't hurt and I haven't bumped my legs. -I have almost brown urine. :S -And recently (warning:this may make me sound like a weirdo) on almost three occasions over the last week, I've felt like my legs were vibrating.. Kinda like the bone inside was buzzing. And it's nothing to do with pins and needles, this has happened when I've been sat on a chair.. But for about 10 minutes they feel sensitive, like I can't stand up because my legs just won't take it. Also if it helps, I'm mega pale, but I have been for a few years now so I don't think that'll affect anything haha. :) But I just wanna know, if any of you have an inkling as to what this could be, please tell me. I don't wanna go to the doctor over nothing, but I'm kinda freaking out a little. :) x

Resolved Question: Apple Detox diet??? Anyone try it or something similar? I'm going on it today...?
Link - Fri, 26 Apr 2013 11:37:26 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm 18 and completely FED up with not losing the last 10 pounds I want to lose. I have tried dieting since January. I just can't stick with it... I end up binging on crap. So, I thought I'd go on this diet to detox my body, empty it of chemicals or whatever and start fresh afterwards and continue to eat healthily with normal, healthy food. I used to eat SO healthy about half a year ago. I ate perfectly, no sweets at all or anything. Then I had a really bad relationship and break up... I turned to food, I gained ten pounds and now eat really crappily. I need to change so I can be 110 by the summer, about one to two months. Will the apple detox help jump start this?? I exercise every day, run or walk. But with this I may just limit it to light walking. Any tips from experience are welcome!'

Resolved Question: Renal Failure in dogs?
Link - Thu, 25 Apr 2013 11:14:45 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi. Can I please have some advice. My family are at our wits end :-( Our little yorkshire terrier Jack is 13. He was diagnosed with renal failure September 2012. He has his bad days but on the whole has totally surprised us and has been great for having the disease. We thought he would go at around christmas time but its now April and he is still with us. On being diagnosed we changed his food to special renal food. He doesnt eat everyday and their are times I know he is starving. We have tried everything food wise that has been recommended for dogs with renal failure. There are times though he does eat and seems okay however sometimes when he does eat, he throws up. The last week he hasnt been himself. Normally if he has a few bad days he comes round again (which I know is normal with renal failure) We took him to the vets and his readings were: Urea : 40 Creatanine: 272 When he was diagnosed his levels were: Urea - 20 & Creatanine 194 The vet said when his levels reached Urea - 60 and Creatanine 300 that was him ready to go. He has been extremley lethargic - more so than usual, sleeps most of the day. Sometimes though he takes himself off and doesnt want to be bothered. Most of the time he wants constant cuddles. I am extremley concerned as he has started whimpering a little and his teeth have started chattering the odd time (which has never happened before). The vet said he is either in pain or hungry. We have now started feeding him anything just to get him to eat (which i feel guilty about as its making his condition worse but the flip side is we would be starving him if we didnt) He also threw up a little bile the other night, I dont know whether this was to do with hunger. He is drinking plenty of water so hes not dehydrated (Although, I know this is part of renal failure). The vet said his temperature was fine. Lastnight he sat in his travel box and wouldnt come out, whimpering a little. This broke my heart. Sometimes I feel like he's trying to tell me something. The vet basically said we had these options: 1) Put him on a drip/dialysis/cathator. He would need taken in for 48 hours (I am not keen on this idea. We done this when he was diagnosed and I wouldnt put him through it again) 2)Arrange for a few weeks time to have him put to sleep and make him comfortable for those few weeks (I just dont know if nows the right time) 3) Let him go as long as he can and feed him anything (which in my opinion is cruel and you would basically be killing him anyway by feeding him all the wrong stuff which ultimately makes his disease worse) Can anyone please advise. Its a hard call because sometimes he is okay. If he pulls round from this episode, is it fair to keep him going until the next one? I know deep down the dog is fighting for us and thats why he has gone as long as he has. His spirit is unbelivable. I just dont know what to do. Please help. Thanks so much to everyone who has already responded

Resolved Question: Flavored Water and Kidney Health?
Link - Wed, 24 Apr 2013 04:52:35 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am diabetic and leaking protein into my kidneys. My doctor says that while my sugar levels and A1C tests look good I'm dehydrated and need to drink 60-64oz of water daily to keep my kidneys healthy and to help flush them because of all the medications I'm on to control blood pressure and diabetes. My problem is -- I can never get more than 32oz of water down in a day. That's only half of what I need according to my doctor. I went on the hunt for flavored water and found this 32oz bottle for only 1.99 at a local dollar store. I looked on the bottle and it has zero calories, zero sugars, zero aspartame, zero sodium, zero carbs, zero artificial coloring. It tastes great and it only lightly sparkles to give it some fizz. I could easily drink 2 bottles of this a day to get a full 64oz of water. The only problem is I haven't had a chance to show my doctor the bottle and have her read over it to give it the clear. I know they say nothing is better for you than plain water, but if you get nauseous just making yourself down plain water isn't the colorless flavored water I found just as effective as plain water? I hate the taste of just lemon juice in my water so that doesn't work to entice me to drink more. I don't want to end up on dialysis but after a solid month of trying to train myself to drink more plain water I'm having no luck. So, will this new flavored water I found be okay?

Resolved Question: Can my husband's ex-wife keep me from picking up his son?
Link - Wed, 24 Apr 2013 00:16:23 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I need some help quickly with the answer to a question. My husband and his ex-wife have joint custody of his son (my stepson) with our time being every weekend and every other school vacation during the school year and every other week during the summer. My husband had kidney re-flux as a child and as a result he is on dialysis after two failed kidney transplants. Of course this means from time to time he experiences medical issues. Last week, he went into the hospital after not feeling well for a few days. They admitted him with a blood infection. He is receiving antibiotics and dialysis until everything is under control. He may not be released in time for his scheduled pick up this Friday. His ex is telling us that she will not allow me to pick up his son and she doesn't want him at the hospital even for a short amount of time. His son is 6, and well aware of dad's medical issues. I say that as a licensed, insured driver who has a great relationship with my stepson she has no right to keep me from picking him up. She also has no right to say that he can't visit with his father in the hospital as long as he isn't made to spend an extensive amount of time there. He is with me and my husband and my two children every weekend with no problems. This has never been an issue until now and I don't know why she is being so difficult. Do we have any grounds to stand on? Court order does not specify a party for pickup, just the days/times.

Resolved Question: What are my friend's chances of living?
Link - Mon, 22 Apr 2013 19:43:51 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I don't know much about medical or health. I know most of you aren't doctors, but maybe you could share some experience. I have a friend who is in his late 20's. He is a diabetic (not sure which type, but he isn't overweight). On Friday night, he started having his first seizure and he stopped breathing. His fiancé is my friend and she's been keeping me updated. The doctors said he got an infection and they don't know what it is or where it came from. He is in a coma and spiked a fever of 106, which caused some brain damage. Saturday, his temperature had gone back to normal, he was responding to pain and moving his arms a little (although in a coma). Yesterday, my friend/his fiancé said that he hadn't moved all day, he wasn't responding to anything and that his kidneys were failing. Today, she said his kidneys are worse & they are going to start dialysis & he also had his EEG, but we don't know the results yet. I read somewhere that kidney failure doesn't automatically mean a death sentence. What chances does my friend have of surviving this?

Description: ok so we live in michigan my mother is going to have surgery on her feet and hands and will need someone to take care of her soon she is 55 i am 26 im willing to move in and help her iv heard that i can get paid compensation from medicare/medicaid for not being able to work/being her full time caregiver. what all do i need to do what does she need to do every thing iv been able to find is for people over the age of 65 and all this stuff is crazy trying to figure it all out @jmitw 1) hopefully it is only going to be short term disability but in reality she has extreme arthritis, and several other things going on. its gotten to the point the tendons are worn out to nothing and bones are curving and what not. so i think she may have long term/ perm disability. 2) she is currently not on ssi/ssdi/ or medicaid. she is currently employed full time for now but the surgery's being done will change that depending on the true extent of the damages 3)assist's: she has a car, shes renting an apt, and i do not think she has anything else and 4) what does "qualified" mean ie: classes, licences, degree's, experience

Resolved Question: Is dating a woman with kidney disease a bad choice?
Link - Sat, 20 Apr 2013 03:46:24 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I started dating a woman who has kidney disease. She received a kidney transplant from her mom when she was 20.She is now 26 with 23% function and will more likely have to undergo dialysis. She's everything I would want a woman,She's beautiful, caring, and simply a good person. She also has 2 successful businesses and does very well for herself. She cares about me and has made it clear I'm the first man she hasn't pushed away since having her illness.I like her very much but have to face the fact that she more then likely can't have children (which is something I want), could become ill, or die.Is it better to end it now even though I'll really hurt her? Am I being selfish?

Resolved Question: Hepatitis C Transmission?
Link - Tue, 09 Apr 2013 13:14:55 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hi everyone. I live in a house with two parents who are carriers for Hep C. I had a test done at the end of 2011 confirming I had not been exposed to the illness after 21 years of living at the same home as them. However, I have recently developed mysophobia (germaphobia), or a fear of contamination and germs. My Mom knicked her hand on a broken piece of glass yesterday. Not a very big cut at all. Minimal bleeding (barely any), and afterwards she washed it up and bandaged the scratch. Thing is, she rolls cigarettes for the family to save us money. I am worried that some of the virus may be left on her fingertips from where it bled and then transferred to the filter/lip of the cigarette. My worry was that I'd then contract it through oral exposure. Am I being completely irrational? I feel like I am. It'd be nice to hear from a medical professional. Really need something to ease my nerves :\

Resolved Question: Sauna suit + master cleanse?

Description: Hi!(: I've been really wanting to both detox and lose weight, I know detoxing is known for jump starting weight loss. Either way I'm going on the master cleanse detox, but would it be harmful to my health to exercise in my sauna suit at the same time? I want to lose weight and cleanse my body in a healthy way. I'm a recovering anorexic, and I really just want to look amazing and still have all my organs in tact!(: if not should I do the cleanse then while easing myself into a normal diet, wear the sauna suit? I wish to keep the weight off, I know this isn't a fast answer, I'm willing to put in the effort. And if you have any suggestions I'm all open ears!(: Thanks xoxo, Amber

Description: I think the reason I'm so worried about it is because my anxiety and I'm a hypochondriac. Like, would I absolutely know if I had it? Details: I haven't gotten my period this month, so for the past 3 days I've been wearing regular tampons (changing them frequently and wearing them only during school hours [so about 6-8 hours, but changed constantly]) simply because my period is heavy when it does start and I didn't want it to leak through my clothes at school. So, would I know if I had TSS? Would I be vomiting and sick right of the bat? I talked to my mom about it and she thinks I'm fine because she's slept with a tampon in for 11 hours before because she forgot about it. Is TSS curable? For about the past three months I've also had very dry skin around where my legs meet my crotch area, the skin is just dry and slightly itchy. What could that be? I do shave down there.

Resolved Question: Perceived lack of empathy/love from family/colleagues has hurt me psychologically during trying times?
Link - Mon, 11 Mar 2013 15:49:13 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm a 26 year old male in medical school. My father has been in dialysis for 2 years, he lost a limb and doctors are saying he will lose the other limb. I have been hesitant to talk about what's happening with him with colleagues and friends. A few months ago I mentioned something to a colleague and she told other people in the school and the matter became public. I was tremendously upset about this, but decided to bite the bullet and try to move on. However, this changed how I saw this particualr colleague, it seemed to me that telling this private information was a harmful act on her part. Going to the hospital to visit my father started taking a toll on me physically, emotionally and academically. At one point, I thought I was loosing my mind. A few colleagues have been recently very good to me and that has helped. I am angry at the fact that people's insensitivity has caused me so much mental pain. During this time, as I was not receiving the help that I wanted/needed I thought that perhaps I didn't do enough for my colleagues and friends. The perceived lack of fairness in my situation, I suppose, has been the most painful part of all. I guess I am looking for advice from someone that understands where I am coming from. I want to get back my strength and carry on with my studies and life.

Resolved Question: Did anyone do the master cleanse diet?
Link - Sat, 09 Mar 2013 15:08:45 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I have tried this cleanse before for 2 days and lost like 2 or 3 pounds. But my mom made me stop because I was only like 12 or 13. But I'm turning 16 in a couple of months and I would like to lose at least 30 - 40 pounds so I could where a bikini and have fun during the summer. Anyways have anyone done this diet before and if so I have a couple of questions to ask. Where did you lose weight the most at? Did you lose weight in your butt? Can I put Truvia in it to make it taste better? And does it matter what maple syrup I use? Will I feel any different than I did before I started it? That's about it. If anyone wants to add anything else, go ahead and help yourself.

Resolved Question: What is a good Detox diet for an ectomorph body type?
Link - Sat, 09 Mar 2013 03:14:48 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am 20 years old and have been having digestion problems and a few health problem. Yes, I have seen a doctor about it and everything seems to have rational and easily fixed by medication. It was suggested to me that I do a detox diet just to try to clear out some of the bad stuff in my system. But its hard trying to find a diet I can actually do. I am about 5'1" and 105lbs. I have a naturally high metabolism and physically need protein though out the day and sustenance or I become ill, light headed, nauseous and irritable. I want to find a detox diet that won't require me to just drink a veggie/fruit juice. My body can't handle just those in a day. Any thoughts or suggestions?
