Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and spinal cord. It damages the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects your nerve cells. This damage slows down or blocks messages between your brain and your body, leading to the symptoms of MS. They can include

  • Visual disturbances
  • Muscle weakness
  • Trouble with coordination and balance
  • Sensations such as numbness, prickling, or "pins and needles"
  • Thinking and memory problems

No one knows what causes MS. It may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when your body attacks itself. Multiple sclerosis affects woman more than men. It often begins between the ages of 20 and 40. Usually, the disease is mild, but some people lose the ability to write, speak or walk. There is no cure for MS, but medicines may slow it down and help control symptoms. Physical and occupational therapy may also help.

Resolved Question: PLEASE HELP!! Weird Symptoms?
Link - Tue, 21 May 2013 11:05:24 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm a 17 year old Male, living in Australia. I have a healthy lifestyle and eat as well as any 17 year old should. Over the last couple of months I've been getting lots of weird symptoms that I'm starting to worry about. •Tingling in Head, Neck, Back, Arms, Legs, Jaw. Quite mild, not painful. Almost constant tingling in some form. •Pins and Needles in arms, hands, feet. Comes and goes more often. Quite random. •Slight numbness/weakness in hands, arms, legs, jaw. Numbness only happened a couple of times. Weakness a bit more common. Again, very random •Tightness in Head, Neck •Heavy Head (only happened 3 times, lasted about half an hour) Heaviness in other areas occasionally (arms) •Throbbing in Head (like a pulse) – sometimes felt in other parts. Comes and goes randomly •Fullness in ears •Dizziness- only occasionly •Feeling Faint- usually with dizziness - only occassionly •Lightheaded- same deal, not all the time •Feeling weak: arms etc. Weak grip •Blurry Vision (cross eyed)- just refocus my eyes and it's good but it happens all the time •Very slight headaches •Tongue Tingling •Occasional Burning sensation in arms •1 bout of diarrhoea •Anxiety (1 major attack). I do have quite a stressful home life with a brother severely affected by autism •Occasionally have episodes where whole body feels heavy (almost like its sinking), trouble focusing, dizziness •Occasionally have episodes (usually in bed) feels like legs are shaking (not jerking, just like rhythmic shaking), head feels funny Some symptoms that I've had for many years and never really done anything about: •Balance Issues •Ringing in ears occasionally •Chest Pains (sometimes very sharp that last for a few seconds, other times less severe) •Muscle Twitches •Sleeping Problems •White spots on fingernails •Body very sensitive to touch •Very sensitive to cold (hands always freezing) •Occasionally when I move my head, there's like a clicking sensation and sharp pain for a couple of seconds Tests I've had: •Brain MRI •Heart Ultrasound, ESG •Abdominal Ultrasound •Chest X-ray •Full spine/neck/pelvis X-ray •Blood Pressure checked •Blood Tests: Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Glucose, C- Reactive, Protein, Hepatitis A, B, C, Full Blood examination All came back OK, except one blood test showed I high high Bilirubin in my blood and Gilbert's syndrome. The spine X-Ray showed my spine was quite out of line, the top 2 vertebrae, and a couple in the middle. Also, one of my legs was much higher than the other. Some other things to note: •I have been kneed in the head a couple of times at sport. (no concussion) •One time at soccer I dove to save a goal and hit my back on the post. Had to go to hospital but nothing serious. •For a few months I had a coffee every morning (I don’t now though) Haven't really got any help from the doctors we've been to. I would really appreciate any ideas from people as to what it might be. Anything at all I can research that it could be. Thank you very very much :-)

Resolved Question: Constant lower back pain on the right side radiating...?
Link - Fri, 17 May 2013 04:04:51 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Hello and thank you for reading. Well for the past couple weeks now I have had a horrible pain on my lower right side on the back, and it radiates into my hip and pelvic area. Now this started off at first being on and off pain. Nothing serious and just recently it remained constant. Its like it was not there then all of a sudden I wake up in the middle of the night with this darn pain that has been there now going on 3 days. I am planning on going to the doctor for this asap but I am just wanting to know what to maybe expect or if any of you out there have gone through this? I do tend to get ovarian cysts but they have never caused this kind of pain and I have even had to have 2 surgeries for ovarian cysts. I am also very nauseous and even to cough and sneeze it KILLS ME! I have a very high tolerance for pain and this is just horrible. Any help is greatly appreciated and I will give 10 pts to anyone who can help me more than Google.

Resolved Question: After second MRI doctor says back is fine?
Link - Fri, 17 May 2013 00:45:21 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I have been going to Kaiser for over a year and a half for my lower back. I completed the pain management course for a bad lower back and pain. They gave me a MRI last year and said I had mild spinosis secondary to congentical canal stenosis, arthritis, bulging disk among other things. I was in pain, and my pain would stay with me where I could not sleep at night because my legs would have shooting cramp like pains. I also have warm sensations going down my legs. After going over a year to Kaiser for this. I started to get the impression they were tired of treating me. A few months ago they gave me six steroid shots all in the same day. The next morning when I was about to get up, I had this terrible pain, and I was doubled over and had chills. It would happen for a few weeks. I called Kaiser and spoke with the doctor who gave me the shots and she told me this was not from the shots, and probably some other back issues I had that I can feel now, because the other problems were taken care of from the shots. I told her I had pain, but never like that before. The shooting pains let up some after the shots, so I was able to sleep a little better, but I still have pain in my lower back and hips when I lift something that has weight. I just got another MRI last week. They did dye this time. My doctor told me my mri was "better" than the first one, and the disc bulge is better, and I should go on and and do my regular routine and go back to work. I told her my back is still painful(pain rate is always 7-8) and if I lift something heavy, it goes to ten and stays theres until I rest it and let time go by. She told me she does not know why my back is still hurting and my "pain level" might be low. I could not believe she said that. I remember my pain therapist telling me that Kaiser had changed their policies regarding the doctor and their ability to deal with SDI (short term), after dealing with me. My doctor at Kaiser was extending my short term disability benefits until they ended. I don't know what the issue was, if it had something to do with workers comp,or the state or what. But anyways, I had been having neck "aches" and pain from my neck and I asked for a x-ray. I know I had arthrithis and a bad disc in my neck but I did not tell the doctor. She gave me a x-ray, and sent me a letter saying everything was normal and good. A red flag went up in my head. Then, After this MRI, the doctor calls me and says my MRI on my back is better and my bulging disc has mysteriously gotten better and I should not be having any back pain, and I might have " chronic pain". But now they say I have epidural lipomatosis. I don't trust Kaiser and I was thinking about taking copies of my X-rays and MRI's and getting another opinion. I would hate to think that Kaiser would not tell the truth and lie rearding a patients health issues just to appease some other entity that is on them regarding SDI or other issues. Is there a word for this kind of behavior?

Link - Thu, 16 May 2013 08:50:25 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I've had this back pain for years now. It has been getting worse over the years and just recently began to be nearly intolerable. When I move it hurts, when I sit it hurts, when I lay down it hurts. Certain random things make it incredibly painful but it always hurts just a little. I recently noticed that if I push on my stomach in the same side the pain is on (right side) the pain goes away but only as long as I apply pressure.

Resolved Question: What is the pain i have on the back of my leg?
Link - Tue, 14 May 2013 07:37:42 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I started a new job today which requires me to stand for long periods of time. I have had jobs like this in the past, but about 6 years ago if not longer. I usually get back pain when standing for too long. Today I had the back pain and also knee pain. I took a hot bath and feel better except for one area. It is the back of my right leg, just behind the knee and a little to the right. It feels like I pulled a muscle possibly. This just started after my first shift at the new job. It is not super painful but I am afraid it may get worse. I am off tomorrow then back at 2PM Wednesday for another long day. Does anyone know what caused this pain? What could it be? Also, can I aggravate it more by long days on my feet?

Resolved Question: Will a no-grain diet cause depression?
Link - Tue, 14 May 2013 01:41:55 GMT - Email The Author
Description: If the whole story really matters- I was on Accutane for 3 months but it made me feel too negative so I stopped. I learned the acctane also worsened my keratosis pilaris. I'm trying a no-grain diet to see if it will help my skin, as its helped several others, and plus humans were never meant to function with high-glycemic foods, so. But if I'm prone to low moods will eating less carbs really make me feel worse? I'd rather have serotonin than smooth skin of course, but I am desperate to fix my skin.

Resolved Question: is marijuana really harmless?based on this i copied from a guy in more detail?
Link - Tue, 30 Apr 2013 20:05:05 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Judging from your posts you have already suffered damage from it! Marijuana potency has grown steeply over the past decade with serious implications for users. Holland probably the most liberal country towards drugs has classified a lot of new cannabis variants alongside heroin! Average levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive ingredient) in marijuana sold in America rose from 3.5% in 1988 to 8.5% in 2006. In the same period the number of admissions to psychiatric hospital caused by the drug soared by 85 per cent due to the fact that those who smoke the drug regularly are more than twice as likely to suffer illnesses such as schizophrenia, hallucinations and delusions later in life.Teens using marijuana to alleviate feelings of depression just compound the problem. People who smoke "skunk" are almost seven times more likely to develop psychotic illnesses. As well as psychotic illness cannabis can cause affective disorders such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Even worse it is linked to cancers. The toxic substances in marijuana smoke, especially the toxicity of acetaldehyde, causes damage to DNA. Because of its lower combustibility it contains 50% more carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including naphthalene, benzanthracene, and benzopyrene, than tobacco smoke. Ammonia levels are 20 times higher while hydrogen cyanide, nitric oxide and certain aromatic amines occurred at levels 3-5 times higher. Users tend to inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers, which increases respiratory burden. It has been shown that the damage usually starts from the first one!! THC increases the activity of a pathway that promotes protein synthesis in the brain. This transient increase of protein synthesis is mediated specifically by cannabinoid receptors expressed on the brain’s inhibitory neurons, and correlated with long-term memory deficits. Cannabis users display neuropsychological dysfunction (relative frontal lobe functioning deficits, cognitive inhibition) and attentional deficits similar to those found in schizotypal or schizophrenia patients. Regular use can shrink the parts of the brain which control memory, emotion and aggression. The hippocampus, which is thought to govern emotion and memory averages 12 percent smaller and the amygdala, which has a part in controlling fear and aggression, 7 percent smaller. This suggests that heavy daily use may be toxic to human brain tissue. Blood flow velocity is significantly higher in users and they have higher values on the pulsatility index (PI), which measures the amount of resistance to blood flow. This is thought to be due to narrowing of the blood vessels that occurs when the circulation system's ability to regulate itself is impaired. This leads to abnormalities in the small blood vessels in the brain. The active chemical in MJ called delta-9-tetrahyrdocannabinol (THC) binds to cannabinoid (CB) receptors located on several cell types in various organs. This greatly increases the risk for heart attacks and strokes in addition to impaired learning and memory. It can also effect physical health. Three to four cannabis cigarettes a day cause the same amount of damage to the lungs as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day. Thus there are rising levels of lung diseases such as emphysema. It can also effect the unborn child. Scientists have identified that endogenous cannabinoids, molecules naturally produced by our brains are functionally similar to THC from cannabis and play significant roles in establishing how certain nerve cells connect to each other. Maternal cannabis use allows THC to travel through the placenta and impair fetal brain development and impose life-long cognitive, social, and motor deficits in affected offspring. Low doses of Ä-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), equivalent to that in the bloodstream of an average marijuana smoker facilitate infection of skin cells and can cause these cells to turn into malignant sarcoma. Men who regularly smoke cannabis have a 70 per cent increased risk of testicular cancer. And then there are all the car crashes caused by people driving under the influence of drugs that are at this moment being quantified. But they already show one in five drivers killed is under the influence of drugs and that more drug drivers kill than drink drivers!! I have been following a pcos friendly diet for about a month now and I fell upon a video that said that pcos patients must not consume dairy. That really hit me hard since I love milk and cheese and just recently, my endocrinologist told me to go buy and consume Vitamin D3 because of my low calcium. How does this make sense? Should I get rid of dairy foods in my diet and consume just the Vitamin D3 or what?

Description: I'm getting really tired of getting sick and it's starting to affect my life. I'm on my 3rd cold of the year already. I am 26 years old, dont smoke, drink or do drugs and yet I pick up colds like I'm HIV positive. What the hell is wrong with me? I take zinc and vitamin C supplements on a regular basis. I do work at UPS where Im handling packages, and I am allergic to dust mites, but still, isn't getting a cold every month and a half way too much?

Resolved Question: I took vitamin D and it made my stomach feel better? why?
Link - Sat, 27 Apr 2013 11:13:00 GMT - Email The Author
Description: For a week I had a funny tummy. I had an appetite but I just felt too tense to swallow much food and my stomach felt full and almost 'blocked'. I was really nauseous, and dizzy too. Because of this, I spent most of the time staying in so dad got me some vitamin D tablets to make up for the fact i wasn't outdoors much. And when i took a tablet, my stomach started waking up and making sounds and although it was aching a bit I could just tell it was recovering. 2 days later and I felt soooo much better, in my head as well as my stomach. So i was pretty happy. So what does this mean? Was I deficient of it in the first place and thats why i didnt feel good? Or is Vit D just good at clearing your stomach? It was like an overnight recovery and I dont understand why it was so effective- i thought it was just a supplement?

Resolved Question: Sharp Stabbing Chest Pain only on Left side?
Link - Fri, 26 Apr 2013 18:47:40 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Does anyone know what this is? I have had this sharp, squeezing, stabbing chest pain on the left side of my chest and it has been going on for the past week, accompanied by shortness of breath, dizzines, and fatigue. It lasts all day too. I've been to the doctor and they don't think it's anything to worry about, and the several EKGs that have been done over the past few weeks were normal. They just found I had a fast heartbeat on one. However, I am worried about it being an underlying cardiac condition. Most of my bloodwork is normal (except Vitamin D). I keep having this left arm pain that comes and goes too. I've been to the ER once and they won't do anything for me...Should I make an appointment with a cardiologist and get all sorts of tests done? I am a little worried. HELP!

Resolved Question: Why do some vitamins have such high doses?
Link - Fri, 26 Apr 2013 07:04:45 GMT - Email The Author
Description: When I look through vitamins I notice some have very high doses (above the 100% of RDA) especially the B vitamins which I know are water soluble and not dangerous like vit A but still..is this amount safe to take? I don't want lectures of eating healthy, which I do I just want a boost and the reason I notice such things is because I have an under active thyroid so I am always scouting to make sure they don't contain iodine :D Every pharmacist or health care practitioner I have spoke to says to avoid iodine in supplements if you have hashimotos as i believe it can increase autoimmune attack on the thyroid..
