Muscle cramps are sudden, involuntary contractions or spasms in one or more of your muscles. They often occur after exercise or at night, lasting a few seconds to several minutes. You have probably had a muscle cramp before. It is a very common muscle problem.

Muscle cramps can be caused by nerves that malfunction. Sometimes this malfunction is due to a health problem, such as a spinal cord injury or a pinched nerve in the neck or back. Other causes are

  • Straining or overusing a muscle
  • Dehydration
  • A lack of minerals in your diet or the depletion of minerals in your body
  • Not enough blood getting to your muscles

Cramps can be very painful. Stretching or gently massaging the muscle can relieve this pain.

Resolved Question: What is the pain i have on the back of my leg?
Link - Tue, 14 May 2013 07:37:42 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I started a new job today which requires me to stand for long periods of time. I have had jobs like this in the past, but about 6 years ago if not longer. I usually get back pain when standing for too long. Today I had the back pain and also knee pain. I took a hot bath and feel better except for one area. It is the back of my right leg, just behind the knee and a little to the right. It feels like I pulled a muscle possibly. This just started after my first shift at the new job. It is not super painful but I am afraid it may get worse. I am off tomorrow then back at 2PM Wednesday for another long day. Does anyone know what caused this pain? What could it be? Also, can I aggravate it more by long days on my feet?

Resolved Question: Services for disabled flyers in airports - anyone any information?
Link - Tue, 14 May 2013 05:42:56 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I have to travel between UK and US every other month. I travel alone, and can't always cope with talking to staff if I need help. I have a problem with my legs - currently undiagnosed - the calf muscles are constantly strained so when tensed they hurt like crazy and can cramp up so bad I end-up on the ground screaming in pain. 50% of the time I'm fine and can walk long distances, but the other 50% I find it very painful and hard to walk. Last airport visit a long line in check-in, long line in security, stairs, long walks to terminal, and standing on a bus all caused me AGONY and I was stuck on the sofa for a few days afterwards as it was too painful to walk. I'm wondering if there are any services in the airport I could use, and HOW would I go about getting access to such services? Could I get any help getting through lines or travelling through the airport, and if so could I cancel such services if I was having a good day? Secondly, I'm autistic so have to use the multi-faith room in the airport to avoid over-stimulation and reserve isle seats at the back of the plane so I don't have to ask anyone to move if I need to get up and to avoid over-stimulation - I can normally reserve the seat I need, but it would be handy if there could be something in place to make absolutely sure I get a suitable seat. Is there any such service? I'll also point out I can't use a phone. At this point I'm uncomfortable using a wheelchair - I can walk after all, and I'm a little worried that if they deem me as needing a wheelchair what happens if I want to pop into shops while on layover, or what about if I'm having a good day so don't need the help? Autumn - my GP's surgery is terrible, but I'm pushing for a referral to a neurologist several things point in the direction of this being neurological - worse when tired, accompanied by leg spasm and RLS. jmitw - saw one of those seat canes before, thought it might help...although it's going to be a pain carrying this, especially if I'm not experiencing symptoms.

Description: Im 16 and still a virgin. Anyways, im pretty tight up there, i can barely even fit a finger in. Last week I had a yeat infection and had to use these things you put in your vagina to cure it and it had an applicator. I was really scared to push it all the way. I got to the point where I could feel it up far in mu vagina and then i got freaked out and took it out. Its not that it hurt...it wasnt that hard to put in but as soon as it started to feel uncomfy I took it out! And it was smaller than my pinky. Not that i am on my period, the weather is SOOO nice at the pool and i hate to not go. I really wanna swim and go sit with my friends. So any tips on how to put it in? Should it be easier? By the way, this is a tampon with an applicator.

Resolved Question: Can my tampon break my hymen?
Link - Wed, 08 May 2013 23:43:00 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I started my period in the middle of the night and I woke up in the morning to go out a tampon in. When I inserted the applicator in, it didn't hurt, but as I pushed the actual tampon in it began to hurt very badly. I eventually got it in but it was very painful so I took it out. I then started to get light headed and I also started vomiting immediately afterwards. After about 20 minute of pain and occasional vomiting, I was perfectly fine and didn't feel sick at all anymore. Do you think I just broke my hymen and I overreacted to it or is there something that could have happened that would harm my health? Also, it was the first time I had worn a tampon since my last period so it isn't toxic shock syndrome. FYI: I haven't worn tampons a lot and my last period was the first time I really started wearing them. Please help me out so I can know what happened and not be scared of tampons anymore!:)

Resolved Question: Muscle pain on one side of my body?
Link - Tue, 07 May 2013 14:02:14 GMT - Email The Author
Description: For years i've been suffering with mild muscle pains on my right side of my body, mainly on the inside of my elbow, on my shoulder and knee. The worst pain is my shoulder and arm, and often the muscle spasms slightly or I get a slight twitch even in my nose/face. The pain is never unbearable but it becomes annoying. I recently got very bad cramp in my leg on the same side of my body. Does anyone know what's causing this? and is there any way I can cure it? or control it better. I'm a 22 year old male, healthy, rarely ill but I am obese, if this has anything to with it?

Resolved Question: Do I have endometriosis?
Link - Tue, 07 May 2013 00:15:17 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I've been having menstrual problems ever since I got my period (around the age of 12). I'm currently 16, and have been to two different gynecologists over the years. One was very vague and said it was probable endo, and the other really didn't give me an answer. Here are my symptoms. -I'm on birth control constantly (don't take placebo) and my period still comes every two months or so- eventually I start to feel pain again and the pill's effects die down. -I've bled for 30+ days straight while on birth control- only when I take a break and get an extremely painful period does the pain go away. -I bleed very heavily on my regular period, and it usually lasts 5-6 (up to 7) days of pain. Usually 3 of those day's the pain is very bad, and out of those 3 days I can't walk/move for 2 of them. -My period pain is HORRIBLE, and I've near passed out from the cramping. -I get back pain on my period, and it hurts to use the restroom. -I have variable pains in my abdominal region and pelvis pain on my period *BIGGEST CONFUSION- for as long as I can remember, i'll have periods of time where I will be having cramps (definite menstrual cramps) while I'm NOT bleeding. This is what confuses the doctors. Even though the pain isn't as intense, it's still bothersome. As of now, I've been having cramps (steadily getting worse) for about 4 weeks without bleeding. I also have headaches every day, with strong ones every other day. Apart from this, I always feel tired, sluggish, and I have muscle pains. Basically I just feel pretty down in the dumps. Do I have endometriosis? And if this isn't endometriosis, what is it? I have an identical twin sister, and she has all the same menstrual problems but NOT the headaches/tiredness (leading my parents to think that the menstrual problems and my general health are two separate issues). Any idea's on what all of this is?

Voting Question: Possible pregnancy or health problem?
Link - Fri, 03 May 2013 06:27:16 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Twice in the past week, I've had pain in my vagina. It felt like the muscles were contracting and I had no control to stop it. It's been almost two weeks since the end of my last period, and today I had some spotting. Also, my lower abdominal muscles cramped up two separate times while I was at the gym. I've been having unprotected sex for over a year with the same person. Could this be an early sign of pregnancy or an underlying health problem?

Resolved Question: Does anybody deal with periods without pads, tampons, menstrual cups, etc?
Link - Wed, 01 May 2013 20:01:39 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am a 20 year old girl and for the past few years I have found that I do not need the aid of any items to keep my periods from leaking. For me, it's almost like peeing. I use the bathroom and deposit the blood when I feel that I need to and stay until I have stopped dripping, which is rarely more than a minute. Once in a while, I may have very light spotting on my underwear if it is a heavier than normal period. But that is once in a blue moon, and during those times I may opt to use tampons. Does anybody else have this experience? I have not been able to find any similar stories on the net. And that is not surprising because cultural norms would lead most to think this is dirty or careless. But for me, this way feels very natural and it has never caused me any problems in terms of vaginal cleanliness or health. Thoughts? Thank you!

Resolved Question: How long should I keep a tampon in?
Link - Tue, 30 Apr 2013 23:08:26 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I'm 13 years old and started my period about 6 months ago. The first 3 times I used a tampon, it hurt REALLY bad to take out. Putting it in was easy. I have been using the lites so I think it's just cause there isn't enough blood. I have been using it for about a week now and it hasn't been hurting that much to take out anymore. I have been keeping it in for about 8-9 hours. How long should I be keeping it in??? And any other reason you think it might hurt to take out? When you take yours out, does it hurt?

Resolved Question: Based on my situation, would birth control be a good idea for me?
Link - Tue, 30 Apr 2013 00:47:20 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I am not nor have ever been sexually active. However I think birth control might be a good thing for me for several reasons: 1. I am an athlete, so I have very sporadic periods (even though I've had my period for 6 years). Sometimes I have a cycle every 3 months, sometimes I get 2 periods in one month! This makes it very difficult to predict, which causes a problem when I go for international competitions. 2. When I do have my period, I get very bad cramps, muscle aches, back pain, and fatigue- not good for an athlete. I heard that birth control may help some of these symptoms? 3. I have bad acne, and I heard birth control can help that as well? (I also heard that some types of birth control can make your breasts grow bigger, which I would LOVE) However, I also have anxiety and I heard that birth control can make that worse? What do you think? Do the pros out weigh the cons? Also, my mom is very old fashioned and I don't think she would let me go on birth control.. any tips on how to approach her? Thanks in advance!

Voting Question: Why do i always feel sick?

Description: Here's an insight: I'm a fourteen year old girl. I'm at a healthy weight, and don't have any health problems that I know of, though many many run in the family. My dad is an ER doctor, so I don't see an actual doctor very often at all. I basically never feel good, ever. Something is always wrong. I'm not a hypochondriac because i don't think something is wrong with me, but I feel sick everyday. My mom and dad (who is a doctor) both told me that I probably have IBS (irritable bowel sydrome) which is what causes my frequent stomach aches, on top of that I'll list a bunch of my symtoms that occur either frequently or infrequently. Frequent- Stomach aches every day, sometimes a stabbing pain irregular bowel movements- either I'll have severe diahhrea with mucusy stuff, or I'll be constipated for a week Chest pain about everyday- on the left side, most of the time it's stabbing/ripping pains, instead of just aching Muscle/rib pains- completely and totally random, and last for periods of time ex. last week i got this horrible pain in my rib bones and legs for three days straight, i couldn't move or sit up without groaning I just get lots of random pains, I have a dull pain in random parts of my arms and hands right now. I also get muscle foot and leg spasms My appetite is pretty inconsistent. I just never feel well. One day it's rib pain, the next day I can't walk without groaning, and the next I have a tension headache and I'm shitting water and can see the food in my poop. I also get horrible periods- unbearable cramps, backaches, bloody nose, fill up a super tampon in under an hour, feet swell, hurts to walk. I sleep, and don't eat horribly. If you have any idea what's going on, please let me know, thanks~ ps. i'm not pregnant, and my parents say that nothings wrong, they don't really care.. i've never had any blood work done and i've only had one cat scan back when i was three

If you have any idea what's going on, please let me know, thanks~

Description: I'm 6 weeks pregnant and for the past 4 days have had almost constant morning sickness. My ob/gyn won't see me until I'm nearly 11 weeks pregnant. Should I go to my family doctor to discus it with him or wait it out? Any remedies? So far I've tried ginger ale, sea bands, crackers as soon as I wake up, and Zantac to help with the acid.

Resolved Question: Track 400m help highschool boy?
Link - Fri, 19 Apr 2013 17:58:54 GMT - Email The Author
Description: Almost 16 sophomore. I'm short (5'2) and weigh 115. I am a health nerd my diet is: breakfast- 2 egg whites, 1/4 egg yoke. 1/2 cup oatmeal (water, organic 2% milk, olive oil, honey, salt). 2 pieces of organic rice bread with half can of tuna and olive oil. And an apple. From breakfast to lunch I eat a banana, a protein shake, and a cheese stick. And for lunch usually vegetable, carbs, and small portion of meat. When I get home cheese and dates, or yogurt and fruit. Dinner is random and before bed a glass of milk. My coach gave me no workout but I just started running on my own and am aiming for a 4mile one day and 1mile next and take Sundays off (I'm religious) which gives me 15 miles a week. The 4miles focus is endurance (run in about 25 mins) and 1 miles is speed (no time yet). I am a sprinter not a long distancer. My PR (which gets better every meet is): 100: 12.1 200: 25.3 400: 56 Any suggestions on workouts? How to run those better, race strategies? My main focus is 400, as it's hardest to train for. Any help would be awesome. P.S. I told coach I'd run a 55 second 400 and wanna show him I can. We have two meets left. The past three my times went from 101 to 58 to 56. I ran the 56 too fast at the begining and had nothing left at the end to sprint (which is what I usally do. But i PRed so I'm confused on the running strategy)

Resolved Question: My ball python shakes and won't eat?
Link - Tue, 09 Apr 2013 17:03:18 GMT - Email The Author
Description: I got a ball python about 3 months ago and he's never had an issue eating. He used to eat every Wednesday, but I had to switch it to Tuesdays because my work schedule had changed and I wasn't home all day Wednesdays to feed him. He never really had an issue, until last week. He ate, but while eating was shaking terribly (just his head and about 6 inches down his neck) this week, he killed the mouse, tries eating it, started shaking and stopped eating. He's done this twice already. And still hasn't eaten. Is this normal? Another thing is he shed about a month ago but some of the skin won't come off. It's still on his head and about 6 inches down his neck. About the same area that shakes when he eats. What should I do?!
