Gabapentin Insomnia Causes and Reviews
What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. If you have it, you may have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. As a result, you may get too little sleep or have poor-quality sleep. You may not feel refreshed when you wake up.
What are the types of Insomnia?Insomnia can be acute (short-term) or chronic (ongoing). Acute Insomnia is common. Common causes include stress at work, family pressures, or a traumatic event. It usually lasts for days or weeks.
Chronic Insomnia lasts for a month or longer. Most cases of chronic Insomnia are secondary. This means they are the symptom or side effect of some other problem, such as certain medical conditions, medicines, and other sleep disorders. Substances such as caffeine, tobacco, and alcohol can also be a cause.
Sometimes chronic Insomnia is the primary problem. This means that it is not caused by something else. Its cause is not well understood, but long-lasting stress, emotional upset, travel and shift work can be factors. Primary Insomnia usually lasts more than one month.
Who is at risk for Insomnia?Insomnia is common. It affects women more often than men. You can get it at any age, but older adults are more likely to have it. You are also at higher risk of Insomnia if you
- Have a lot of stress
- Are depressed or have other emotional distress, such as divorce or death of a spouse
- Have a lower income
- Work at night or have frequent major shifts in your work hours
- Travel long distances with time changes
- Have an inactive lifestyle
- Are African American; research shows that African Americans take longer to fall asleep, don't sleep as well, and have more sleep-related breathing problems than whites.
Symptoms of Insomnia include:
- Lying awake for a long time before you fall asleep
- Sleeping for only short periods
- Being awake for much of the night
- Feeling as if you haven't slept at all
- Waking up too early
Insomnia can cause daytime sleepiness and a lack of energy. It also can make you feel anxious, depressed, or irritable. You may have trouble focusing on tasks, paying attention, learning, and remembering. Insomnia also can cause other serious problems. For example, it could make you may feel drowsy while driving. This could cause you get into a car accident.
How is Insomnia diagnosed? To diagnose Insomnia, your health care provider
- Takes your medical history
- Asks for your sleep history. Your provider will ask you for details about your sleep habits.
- Does a physical exam, to rule out other medical problems that might cause Insomnia
- May recommend a sleep study. A sleep study measures how well you sleep and how your body responds to sleep problems.
Treatments include lifestyle changes, counseling, and medicines:
- Lifestyle changes, including good sleep habits, often help relieve acute (short-term) Insomnia. These changes might make it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep.
- A type of counseling called cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can help relieve the anxiety linked to chronic (ongoing) Insomnia
- Several medicines also can help relieve your Insomnia and allow you to re-establish a regular sleep schedule
If your Insomnia is the symptom or side effect of another problem, it's important to treat that problem (if possible).

Has anyone experienced Ischemic Colitis after taking higher doses of Gabapentin? The episode started with guteral pain in my left side of my abdomen. The diarrhea commenced for three hours, then ten hours of BLOOD STOOLS. NOT bloody stools, this was JUST BLOOD in the stool. I had thirteen stools in ten hours with only blood. Then my hsuband arrived home and took me to the emergency room. I had been writhing in pain on the bathroom floor. This was very frightening and draining, since my mother died of colon cancer at age 35, and my brother had Crohn's. HOwever, I then was admitted to the emergency room, and been given medicine to counteract the symptoms. The Dr did not want to admit it could be the Gabapentin, but I feel strongly it is. I have NEVER had anything like this in my life, and reading the small print on the pamphlet from the rx, colitis may be a very rare negative effect of taking Gabapentin. I am rare. I have annual check-ups at the MAyo clinic, so my health had been clean as a whistle last year. There were not indications of disease brewing on the horizon. I am up to date on all colonoscopies, endoscopes, and general full checkups. They would know if something were amiss 'down south'. I was given the Gabapentin for nerve pain three years ago, after a spinal, right leg foot injury. After years of pain, one will try anything. HOwever, the side effects of this higher dose(900mg 3 x daily) for me were debilitating. I was in the hospital for two days, but feel perhaps I will not be completely myself until I get myself off of this nasty drug. That is how I feel anyhow, and I have the photo of the blood to show. NOt Pretty. |

Hello, |

I was taking 1200 mg of Gabapentin for bi polar a couple of years and had side effects of sominence, periferal edema, unbalance, fuzziness between me and reality, loss of memory, shankiness in my hands. I know this sounds bad, but it stopped my anxiety, random talk in my had, I was able to relax more. My doctor was ignorant of the side effects of this drug so I had to educate myself and take action. I reduced the mg to 600mg per day. 300mg morning and 300mg night and the side effects have lessened. I feel much better. I think each person reacts differently to medications and the patient has to be the final arbitor. |

I just started taking Gabapentin for visual, auditory and tactile hallucinations. I've been on it four days and it seems to be working....fewer hallucinations. I was hospitalized last week to determine the cause of my hallucinations but my doctor was unable to give me a difinitive answer. He feels they are of either a psychiatric or neurologicalorigin. I'm a big fan of Gabapentin and I hope it works for me. It worked wonders for my daughter in 07 when she had spinal fusion surgery fior scoliosis. She was in a study (she got the actual Gabapentin) to determine how effective Gabapentin is in treating spinalsurgical pain. My daughter hit her morphine (?)button less than other pattients receiving a Gabapentin placebo. |
