If you or someone in your family has experienced a serious side effect to a health product, you are encouraged to report the experience to your health care professional (e.g. physician, pharmacist). You could also complete a copy of the side effect reporting form or report your side effect to FDA.

Side effects reports are analyzed to discover potential health product safety signals. Some important reactions may take an extremely long time to develop or occur infrequently. Continued monitoring of adverse reactions is thus essential to maintain a comprehensive safety and effectiveness profile of health products.

Ponstan Side Effects Reported to FDA

The following Ponstan reports list potential signals of serious risks and new safety information that were identified using the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).
FAERS is a database that contains information on adverse event and medication errors reports submitted to FDA by healthcare professionals (such as physicians, pharmacists, nurses and others), consumers (such as patients, family members, layers and others) and manufacturers.

The appearance of Ponstan on this list does not mean that FDA has concluded that the drug has the listed risk. It means that FDA has identified a potential safety issue, but it does not mean that FDA has found a causal relationship between the drug and the listed risk.
Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Abdominal Pain Upper, Weight Decreased
This is a report of a 74-year-old female patient (weight: NA) from CH, suffering from the following symptoms/conditions: back pain, who was treated with Ponstan (dosage: 500 Mg, As Needed, start time: Apr 05, 2013), combined with:
  • Ibuprofen (600 Mg, Frequency Between 2x/day And 4x/day)
  • Cymbalta (60 Mg, 1x/day)
  • Imovane (7.5 Mg, 1x/day)
  • Lansoprazole (30 Mg, 1x/day)
and developed a serious reaction and side effect(s). The consumer presented with:
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain Upper
  • Weight Decreased
which developed after the beginning of treatment. This case can indicate the possible existence of increased vulnerability to Ponstan treatment in female patients, resulting in diarrhoea side effect. The patient was hospitalized.

This report suggests a potential Ponstan Syncope side effect(s) that can have serious consequences. A female patient (weight: NA) from SWITZERLAND was diagnosed with the following symptoms/conditions: prophylaxis and used Ponstan (dosage: NA) starting Jan 01, 2004. Soon after starting Ponstan the patient began experiencing various side effects, including:
  • Syncope
Drugs used concurrently:
  • Dafalgan
  • Rebif
Although Ponstan demonstrated significant improvements in a number of clinically relevant cases, troublesome symptoms, such as syncope, may still occur.

Syncope, Seasonal Allergy
This Syncope, Seasonal Allergy problem was reported by a consumer or non-health professional from SWITZERLAND. A female patient (weight: NA) was diagnosed with the following symptoms/conditions: prophylaxis. On Jan 01, 2004 this consumer started treatment with Ponstan (dosage: NA). The following drugs were being taken at the same time:
  • Dafalgan
  • Rebif
When commencing Ponstan, the patient experienced the following unwanted symptoms/side effects:
  • Syncope
  • Seasonal Allergy
Although all drugs are carefully tested before they are licensed for use, they carry side effect risks. Some side effects, such as syncope, may become evident only after a product is in use by the general population.

Vomiting, Gastritis, Abdominal Pain Upper, Gastric Ulcer
This is a report of a 70-year-old female patient (weight: NA) from SWITZERLAND. The patient developed the following symptoms/conditions: arthralgia, cardiovascular event prophylaxis and was treated with Ponstan (dosage: NA) starting NS. Concurrently used drugs:
  • Aspirin (100 Mg, Qd)
  • Nisulid (Unk)
  • Co-enatec (1 Df, Qd)
Soon after that, the consumer experienced the following side effects:
  • Vomiting
  • Gastritis
  • Abdominal Pain Upper
  • Gastric Ulcer
The patient was hospitalized. This opens a possibility that Ponstan treatment could cause the above reactions, including vomiting, and some female subjects may be more susceptible.

Gastric Ulcer, Haematemesis, Abdominal Pain Upper, Gastritis
A 70-year-old female patient (weight: NA) from SWITZERLAND with the following symptoms/conditions: arthralgia, cardiovascular event prophylaxis started Ponstan treatment (dosage: NA) on NS. Soon after starting Ponstan treatment, the subject experienced various side effects, including:
  • Gastric Ulcer
  • Haematemesis
  • Abdominal Pain Upper
  • Gastritis
Concurrently used drugs:
  • Aspirin (100 Mg, Qd)

The patient was hospitalized. This finding indicates that some female patients could be more vulnerable to Ponstan.

Respiratory Tract Infection, Gastric Haemorrhage, Pneumonia

  • Rebif
The patient was hospitalized.

Arrhythmia, Candidiasis, Cheilitis, Epistaxis, Fungal Infection, Hypotension, Pancytopenia, Rash Maculo-papular
In this report, Ponstan was administered for the following condition: rheumatoid arthritis, candidiasis.A 68-year-old female consumer from SWITZERLAND (weight: NA) started Ponstan treatment (dosage: 500 Mg, Unk) on Aug 01, 2010.Sometime after starting the treatment, the patient complained of the following side effect(s):
  • Arrhythmia
  • Candidiasis
  • Cheilitis
  • Epistaxis
  • Fungal Infection
  • Hypotension
  • Pancytopenia
  • Rash Maculo-papular
A possible interaction with other drugs could have contributed to this reaction:
  • Diflucan (Unk)
  • Metoject (Unk)
  • Prednisolon (10 Mg, 1x/day)
  • Humira (1 Every 2 Weeks)
  • Torem (20 Mg, 3x/day)
  • Irfen (800 Mg, 1x/day)
  • Augmentin '125' (Unk)
  • Aspirin (100 Mg, 1x/day)
The patient was hospitalized.Establishing a causal relationship between a specific drug and consumer's side effects is complex, but it is possible that in this report Ponstan treatment could be related to the listed above side effect(s).

This report suggests that a Ponstan Forte (mefenamic Acid) / Ponstel / Nda 15-034 treatment could be associated with the listed above side effect(s).
