Mucinex Cough Causes and Reviews

Coughing is a reflex that keeps your throat and airways clear. Although it can be annoying, Coughing helps your body heal or protect itself. Coughs can be either acute or chronic. Acute Coughs begin suddenly and usually last no more than 2 to 3 weeks. Acute Coughs are the kind you most often get with a cold, flu, or acute bronchitis. Chronic Coughs last longer than 2 to 3 weeks. Causes of chronic Cough include

  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)
  • Smoking
  • Throat disorders, such as croup in young children
  • Some medicines

Water can help ease your Cough - whether you drink it or add it to the air with a steamy shower or vaporizer. If you have a cold or the flu, antihistamines may work better than non-prescription Cough medicines. Children under four should not have Cough medicine. For children over four, use caution and read labels carefully.

Mucinex Cough Reviews

Tue, 28 Feb 2012

I bought Mucinex 12 hour expectorant with 600mg of guaniffesein. I thought this was suppose to thin out the mucus and help expel the phlegm. Instead I experienced a terrific headache, sinus pressure in my ears , and it dried up all my mucus (like using an antihistamine) that I never had any productive Cough or expelling of phlegm! I also drank herbal teas with lemon and honey and homemade vegetable soup during the day and sipped on tea all day long. I was so dried up and headachy that I had to use steam from a boiling pot to help open and moisten sinus airways. After a while I decided to eat a lot of real food to help absorb the potency of this formula. NEVER NEVER take this! I returned it to Walgreen's and got my money back. Instead of helping my cold, Mucinex made my whole day un bearable!

Had a very bad cold with an unrelenting Cough. Took Mucinex DM on pharmacists recommendation. First night was great, slept didn't Cough as much. continued with medication.
Second day -Started feeling unusually sleepy/ cold /weird headache loose bowels nausea odd feelings Put it down to the cold getting worse. Second day read box for side effects. NONE I was having. Day three -Now horrible cramping diarrhea, nausea and dehydration though drinking clear fluids non stop. becoming irrational and hypersensitive, face felt slightly numb. Finally checked the internet and found this.Soon as stopped, much better. Still have a cold, but I don't care. Lemon, honey and Irish whiskey working much better for me.

My lungs are failing and I believe its from 3 doses of Muscinex dm. I had Bronchitis and took Muscinex on advice from my Dr. A week before that I had quit smoking, so now that's all anyone pays attention to, but while I smoked I NEVER had any lung problems. I quit because I got tired of the smell around me, not because of any physical problems. I have never had any excess mucus, in fact I have never Coughed.
Twice now I have been unable to draw in breath and have had to be hospitalized. One of my nurses agreed that the drug may have glazed my lungs, and that's exactly how they feel now. My voice is raspy and I lose it completely every few days, usually from trying to have a conversation.
I am seeing a pulmonary specialist who has me on Spiriva until tests are finished but neither that, Albuterol or Flovent have any effect on how I feel. I am extremely short of breath when talking on the phone or even walking to the car. I have gained 20 lbs from my inactivity and that doesn't help.
Muscinex has changed my life drastically, and may be what ends it. That stuff needs to be pulled.

My husband was taking Mucinex routinely for COPD to thin the heavy mucus, but after about 3 weeks, he began having serious mucusy Coughing fits, then had emotional bouts. After reading this site, I had him stop and the problems cleared in about 15 hours.

I had Cough last Tuesday, it was bad that I decided to look for Cough meds in the cabinet. Found Mucinex 1200mg and took it. That afternoon, I could hardly smell or taste. I again took one tablet yesterday. Still not able to smell or taste. Then figured out maybe it's the effect of Mucinex. I searched online and found out im not the only one who experienced it. What do I do to bring back my sense of taste and smell again? And till when will it return? Thank you. please help.. email me at delacruz_mavic.com

oh wow!!! im am SO relieved i found this discussion. i was Coughing with a greenish plegm for about a week before buying Mucinex DM upon recommendation of a Duane reade pharmacist. as soon as i started taking the drug, i started having a slight fever (just above the normal temperature, and those are the nastiest ones), i would suddenly feel chilly, go to bed, cover myself up with two blankets, then it would go away in like halfhour, i would get back up from the bed, to do stuff around the house then the fever would come back, and so on. besides the fever, not only did it not get rid of the Cough and phlegm, the Cough never really stopped and the phlegm turned into a different color, very light yellow almost white. i did not measure the blood pressure or anything, but other (un)funny things were happening...this feeling of helplessness, sense of dying, depression, sweating (my pillow and my sheets would be all wet in the morning) and fatigue, fatigue, fatigue. i was irritable towards the slightest things, the point of wanting to smash something, but not really being able to do so due to weakness and fatigue. scary stuff if you ask me. and all the time not really realizing that it may have just been Mucinex's fault. so the Cough was not really going away, and neither did the phlegm, i went to see a doctor, who told me that taking Mucinex DM did not really make any sense since i already had had the phlegm, and all the drug did was producing more of it. the first thing she ordered was that i immediately stop the drug, and prescribed me different a different one for Cough, some stronger prescription stuff. ok, now the last time I took Mucinex DM was about 8 hours ago, and I am feeling less depressed (partly because i saw this discussion), a little stronger physically... still sweating a little, just becuase the drug has not completely left the system. i am going to try to return it to the pharmacy tomorrow. if they don't give me a refund, i do not give a crap, i'll just leave the poison pills with them anyway. this stuff should be seriously questioned, and maybe taken off the shelves...... funny thing i started typing "Mucinex dm" in the google search, and the 1st suggestion was "Mucinex dm side effects". someone should take a note of that.

I just took this last night to stop a Cough. Woke up around 1:00 thinking I was going to get sick. I feel like I had 20 beers or 20 mountain dews, one or the other. My pupils are huge and will not change even when looking directly into a light. It scared me so I looked it up on line and found that others had the same issues. Wish I knew which ingredient what was doing this so I could ensure I did not take it again. I have removed this from my home.

I took Mucinex DM 1200mg once at 10:30 pm and again at 10:30 am. By noon I wasn’t functional at all, I had severe loss of focus, my eyes were dilated, and I was really slow, on top of the usual side effects of being jittery and nauseous. Since my Cough was so unbearable I took one more that evening at 10:30pm. It is now 1 o’clock my time and the same side effects have not worn off yet. Should I be worried?
Thu, 22 Jan 2009
I was taking Mucinex DM for 1 day because I had a Cough I could not get rid of. My husband had success with MucinexDM so he told me to take 2. I took 2 in the early morning and again at 2am. By about 3-330 am I was having labored breathing and could feel like my chest was being compressed like a water bottle. I stopped taking Mucinex and will be happier with the Cough. Has anyone else had this reation?
Sun, 25 Jan 2009
I took Mucinex extra strength. After about 6 hours my breathing became labored and my chest felt like it was being compressed. I also was nervous and restless. I stopped taking it and today I still have my cold but feel better without the Mucinex. FDA approved? I have taken liquid Cough medicines with guaifensin many times befor and have never experienced a side effect. dosage is to much. Expensive and dangerous..
