Resolved Question: Melanoma Brain Metastases. Gleevec?
(Tue, 27 Oct 2009 03:38:11 GMT)
Hi. ((Overview)) My grandmother has Melanoma. It started with a mole on her leg, and spread to her lymphnodes. They removed the mole and the surrounding affected area as well as the infected lymphnodes (the affected mole and area was located behind her knee on the leg, the lymphnodes affected were in her groin area.) She was fine for a year, another reoccurence and it was removed and she was declared cancer free. She did Interferon treatments because she was "cancer free".Those ended last ye

Resolved Question: Does Gleevec cause blood thinning ?
(Wed, 26 Aug 2009 22:46:57 GMT)
I have been on Gleevec since March of this year. I have never had a lot of bleeding whenever I've had blood taken, shots, or even after my bone marrow biopsies/aspirations until the last couple of weeks. Could Gleevec have something to do with this ?

Resolved Question: To control diarrhea my husband takes four immodium at each meal; he has been experiencing severe vomiting?
(Wed, 22 Jul 2009 06:25:06 GMT)
My husband routinely takes four immodium at each meal, to control reactions from Gleevec, he takes for GIST. But he is experiencing vomiting and unrelenting diarrhea, faintness, sleepiness etc. A gastroenterologist has prescribed a med for possible inflamed colon or intestinal area. He is even vomiting up a meal while eating it...I have long worried that he is overdosing on immodium, and should stop it. What say you?

Resolved Question: USA health Care system. Hospitals and Pharmaceutical Companies are at present rationing health care. Is it so?
(Mon, 20 Jul 2009 04:32:58 GMT)
Rationing by ability to pay. Dr. Art Kellermann, associate dean for public policy at Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta, recently wrote of a woman who came into his emergency room in critical condition because a blood vessel had burst in her brain. She was uninsured and had chosen to buy food for her children instead of spending money on her blood-pressure medicine. In the emergency room, she received excellent high-tech medical care, but by the time she got there, it was too late to save her

Gleecec has not been tested on liver cancer as I know. A man ,I know ,had liver cancer. He would not take chemo. The doctor gave him Gleevec. It stopped his cancer. I read that he would have been dead in one year . He has to continue to take Gleevec. He has been alive for 15 years now.

Resolved Question: Does anyone have advice regarding involuntary Gleevec cessation?
(Tue, 20 Jan 2009 23:49:22 GMT)
My husband has been on Gleevec (600 mg's daily) for the past 4 years for a GIST tumor, up until 4 days ago when he ran out, and his insurance/prescription coverage changed their policies last fall, & totally dropped the ball. They're supposed to be "expediting" his order, but we've been dealing with them since last Sept. to get this transition in place by Jan. '09, so their idea of "expedite" could very well mean 3-4 weeks! How long can one go without the med before the tumor starts growing

I have had Leukemia - CML for the past 8 1/2 years. Yesterday I went to the doctor for a visit after having had some intense blood work done a few weeks ago. My doctor had increased the amount of chemo - Gleevec - I had to take to 400 mg about 4 months ago. Well, guess what?! the percentage of bad cells has finally dropped from 97% to 17%. Would anyone like to join me in a "thank you God" and a wooo-hooo and a happy laugh and some Halloween candy! I think we all deserve something happy. Have a

A family member had a GIST tumor (along with half his stomach and spleen) removed this summer. Now he's supposed to take Gleevec for 6-12 months; but he doesn't have insurance. Resolved Question: Weight Gain From Medication (Gleevec)?
(Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:10:20 GMT)
I've been on Gleevec for CML since November of 2002. I've been steadily gaining weight and I believe it's due to the medication. I eat very healthy (lots of fresh spinach salads with fresh veggies, lean meat, fish), don't eat chips, sweets and other junk food, don't drink soda, drink about 1.5 liters of water in the morning at work and a liter of green tea in the afternoon at home. I figure my daily calorie intake is around 1000 calories a day. I used to exercise daily but there were no cha

Resolved Question: I know a 20 yr old in Philippines who has Leukemia (CML) & can't afford medical care? Suggestions?
(Mon, 24 Mar 2008 20:18:05 GMT)
This is a 20 year old single mother who has no health insurance and earns sometimes $75 a month. I have read that Gleevec is often used for this kind of leukemia but the cost is almost $6000 per month. I thought of Doctors Without Borders but as far as I can tell they are not in the Philippines. I wondered if anyone knew of any other free medical care that might be available. Thanks.

If so, how many mg. do you take a day? How much do you weigh? What are your side effects? Do you also have CML? I would appreciate any answers, sometimes you feel so alone... Thank you both for answering my question - I appreciate the input.

Resolved Question: Leukemia and Uterine Fibroids?
(Sat, 02 Feb 2008 02:19:20 GMT)
I usually don't like asking health questions on the net, but I am trying to do research and this situation is very hard to find. My mother just found out she has uterine fibroids that are very large. I know that a lot of women have these, but my mom also has leukemia. This leaves out the option for surgery since she can't be around germs in a hospital (due to low immunity.) The doctors are speaking to each other right now about the option of taking a medicine for the fibroids along with th

I've been taking Gleevec 400 mg. since 03-01-06, have all the side effects and am almost bauld on top of my head. I think I look like I'm alot older than I am since I've been taking Gleevec. Resolved Question: Do you have to stay at the Mayo Clinic to take the stomach tumor drug Gleevec ?
(Sat, 30 Sep 2006 22:14:34 GMT)
I have read some of the other questions about stomach tumors and the use of Gleevec at the Mayo Clinic. Is this treatment inpatient or do you just take it during your normal daily routine? I just found out I have one that they say needs to be removed but I guess I have to have some kind of internal sonagram done to find out if it has blood vessels attached to it or not. It would be nice if you didn't have to wait so long to see if it is cancerous or not.
