Open Question: How does Olanzapine work (Question for pharmacists, or other healthcare profesionals)?
(Fri, 20 Nov 2009 22:06:27 GMT)
I understand that Olanzapine is an antagonist at both dopamine D2 and 5-HT2 receptors (among others). Now, I can see why Olanzapine may reduce the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and related disorders as it acts to block dopamine at the receptor site, but I can't work out why introducing a 5-HT2 antagonist (as olanzapine is) would reduce the negative symptoms. Surely this would decrease serotonin transmission in the brain and increase the negative. I note that aripiprazole is a 5-HT2 agoni

Resolved Question: Cause of recurrent priapism?
(Sat, 14 Nov 2009 14:32:38 GMT)
My husband is a Psychiatric Patient. We are in a huge dilemma and we really need some help. My husband has been taking Anti Depressants since last 10 years. Sometimes, he had to be put on Antipsychotics On and Off. But the biggest problem is that although these antipsychotics ( particularly Olanzapine ) work the best for him, he suffers from acute and recurrent Priapism ( prolonged continuous penile erection lasting from 10 hours to 37 hours, once he had to be Aspirated ) after taking these an

Resolved Question: My mother is reacting very strangely to her pill prescription and needs help, anyone with same symptoms help!?
(Wed, 11 Nov 2009 22:35:21 GMT)
Okay. I am a very concerned son, trying to find out what is going on with my mother, and I'm taking my chances everywhere I possibly can to try to find help. We take her to the hospital and to her regular doctor, almost every other day. My mother is on antidepressants and other various medications for cancer, kidney and liver failure, and nausea. Lately, she has been walking around in almost a 'zombie' like state, extremely slurred speech, very unstable balance, swollen tongue, nausea, diarrhe

Resolved Question: Does anyone have the following, i guess, 'side effects' from these medications?
(Thu, 05 Nov 2009 21:37:19 GMT)
I take olanzapine wafers 10mg and fluoxetine 40mg, have done for about 2 months now on this combination, and now i just feel dead inside. I used to feel, maybe a bit too much, hence the tablets, but I feel well and truly past the point of any feelings that i cant even cry, or laugh. Is it normal that this medication makes you beyond feelings? I am aware that the meds are to stabilize me, but when they take everything away....

Resolved Question: Does olanzapine conflict with anti-depressant medication?
(Tue, 20 Oct 2009 14:30:49 GMT)
i read that olanzapine blocks the dopamine (D2) receptor and serotonin (5HT2A) receptor. Anti-depressants are made to increase serotonin. If olanzapine blocks the serotonin receptor, won't that counter the anti-depressant ?

Resolved Question: How does Aripiprazole (Abilify) work?
(Fri, 04 Sep 2009 20:12:30 GMT)
I'm a student psychiatric nurse in the UK and I've noticed that quite a few clients are treated with Aripiprazole if they haven't had success with the standard atypicals (Olanzapine, Risperidone, etc.). However, looking at the pharmocology of this drug, I can't understand why it would work for individuals suffering from psychosis. As I understand it, both typical and atypical APs work as an antagonist at various dopamine receptor sites (specifically D2). However, Ariprprazole acts as a p

Resolved Question: How can I increase my metabolic rate?
(Wed, 02 Sep 2009 15:07:18 GMT)
I do exercise quite a bit but I'm on antipsychotics (olanzapine and haloperidol) which make me hungry too often. Instead of being hungry a lot, I would rather eat more but have a better metabolism so that I don't put on weight. I am 52kg and 1.64m tall.

Resolved Question: OCD problems, need help?
(Mon, 31 Aug 2009 18:29:54 GMT)
I had bad ocd for about a while now. Last month I developed severe depression because of my ocd. Although, my doctor raised the dosage of my prozac to 40mg, and put me on zyprexa (olanzapine)7.5mg, I lost my of my depression, but only helped a bit (25%) with my ocd. Recently , I've been constantly obsessing about my brother, and I'm scared of him, because of something (with little value) that I've done, and he was nagging me and annoying me about it for a day, which was about a week and a half

Resolved Question: How to stop my doctor from putting me on Olanzapine (Zyprexa) ?
(Wed, 05 Aug 2009 16:41:05 GMT)
I'm bipolar and recently my doctor suggested replacing risperidone with Olanzapine. He warmed me very seriously that this medicine has a strong side effect of putting on weights. I refused and then he said we'll see how the situation goes. I googled on this topic and have a few questions to ask: Is it true that the reason why Olanzapine guts you on weight is not only because of the increased appetite, but unlike some other anti-depressants, also prevents calories from being burnt during exerc

(Sun, 26 Jul 2009 20:30:45 GMT)
i'm currently seeing a psychiatrist and cpn for psychosis but they really aren't helping me and i have reasons to believe that my psychiatrist is working for someone bad and evil towards me. i am currently on medication. i switched from olanzapine 10mg and am currently on 5mg of abilify but i'm worried they're going to make me increase my dosage. it took me ages to feel okay on abilify and i don't even think i need it! it's all so confusing. but i'm terrified they'll make me increase my dose

(Wed, 22 Jul 2009 16:34:51 GMT)
and I still feel terrible, I feel depressed, all the mirtazapine is doing is helping me sleep because I have insomnia. My psychiatrist will only change me to olanzapine but iv told him it is putting on too much weight and uncomfortable and painful when I walk. Resolved Question: Stopped Valproate because I was told it makes you gain weight?
(Sun, 28 Jun 2009 22:14:21 GMT)
I put on a large amount of weight taking Seroquel & olanzapine. I've been on Sodium Valproate (epilim) since then, and it made me so much happier that I was able to lose 24lbs in the last 2mnths. A friend told me last week, that my body would get used to the valproate, & I'd put on weight, so I stopped. I'm more 'down' now & want to spend all day in bed; don't want to exercise. I also tend to eat more when unhappy, so feel valproate was better. Do you always gain weight on it? How come I was l
