Omeprazole Gastrooesophageal Reflux Disease Causes and Reviews

Your esophagus is the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) happens when a muscle at the end of your esophagus does not close properly. This allows stomach contents to leak back, or reflux, into the esophagus and irritate it.

You may feel a burning in the chest or throat called heartburn. Sometimes, you can taste stomach fluid in the back of the mouth. If you have these symptoms more than twice a week, you may have GERD. You can also have GERD without having heartburn. Your symptoms could include a dry cough, asthma symptoms, or trouble swallowing.

Anyone, including infants and children, can have GERD. If not treated, it can lead to more serious health problems. In some cases, you might need medicines or surgery. However, many people can improve their symptoms by

  • Avoiding alcohol and spicy, fatty or acidic foods that trigger heartburn
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Not eating close to bedtime
  • Losing weight if needed
  • Wearing loose-fitting clothes

Omeprazole Gastrooesophageal Reflux Disease Reviews

Wed, 23 May 2012

I was on Omeprazole for 3 month, taking one 20mg dose a day. Towards the end of the 3 months, I started getting moderate to severe leg, foot, arm, and hand cramps. I went to my doctor, and she believed it was due to the Omeprazole and suggested I wean myself off of it over the course of a week. I did, and the stomach pain it was initially prescribed for did not come back, but since then I have had daily leg and arm pains (sometimes chest pain as well), and slight headaches. It has been approximately a month since I stopped taking this medicine and I still have these pains and cramps. Is anyone else still experiencing this after stopping using Omeprazole

I'm going back to the doctor on Monday to figure out if something else is wrong. These pains, and the anxiety I have from not knowing what is causing them is really disrupting my life. I've been afraid that I have blood clots because of the pain in my legs, but the pains are so random, sudden, and occur in so many different parts of my legs/arms that I've been told it's inconsistent with a blood clot. I'm not sure if I am just being paranoid, or if this medication has left me with some sort of anxiety disorder, but I find myself constantly worrying about the pains all over my limbs. Would be great to hear from someone else that they experience the same thing and it went away in time...

Thanks,
Ash

I have been taking Omeprazole for nine years and in the last year I have suddenly developed dizzy episodes, heart palpitations, and lung spasms that prevent me from breathing all the way in or all the way out so I feel like i'm suffocating. This initially started during the night when I would wake up because I had stopped breathing. It has now progressed to full on attacks that leave me too breathless to hold a conversation, or eat. The attack I had two weeks ago was so bad that I got my jammies and toothbrush ready and was going to call an ambulance, when it began to subside. When the attacks began I also experienced pain and numbness down my left arm, and my hand tingled like pins and needles and went cold. About a year ago it all kicked off with what I believed to be an anxiety attack, though I was not anxious. I went dizzy, my forehead and cheek went pins and needles and I had a head ache. Also when I was pregnant I worked out two hours a day and ate healthy, then in the last six weeks I suddenly ballooned up three stone, totalling five stone of baby weight, despite excercising so much, with weights, that I now have a curve in my spine. I shed the first couple of stone over a few months then was left with three stone that will not go away, despite doing gillian micheals thirty day shred dvd and a davina one- - both each day from two weeks after my son was born, and dieting. eventually I tried the Harcombe diet when I  burned out from all the excercise and watched a stone and a half creep off at  a rate of a quarter of a pound every two weeks, only to yoyo back up half a stone for absolutely no reason. I was at my wits end, then the respiratory problems started and my mum asked if it could be the omeprezole. I dismissed it- but I had not read the side effects list! Eversince I got put on this medicine my weight has crept up and up and i have been forced to do ten hours excercise a week just to maintain a weight I had to starve to get to- which was above the weight I should be for  a five foot two woman. I never could explain it, I've just fought it till now, when I'm so burned out all I can do is stare at my fat in the mirror and then eat chocolate! My diet is wheat free, grain free except for oats, it has been vegan and vegetarian, but as I said I gave up so now i'm back on meat and milk! Not wheat-i'm allergic. For the record I can't be accused of being annorexic- I weigh about twelve stone. Havent weighed since I had melt down and gave up, and drowned my sorrow with toblerone. How can you work so hard and have so strict a diet with no results?  Long story short (too late for that!) I have given up omeprezole- I dont know how you'r meant to but I just stopped taking it. I just pray that it was the cause of the weight gain and not being able to lose it- I was a size eight when they put me on this stuff! And I hope it comes off now! What has also scared me is that this last year, I have been trying to work out why so much hair comes out in the shower, and why last time I went to the hairdresser's I was told that I had noticabely less hair on one side of my head than the other.  So I read the side effects list of the omeprezole and its all there, the last nine years! even the thinning hair! I have had a random outbreak of hives, and dry yellowing eyes as well. Also I have no energy, ever and exercise exhausts me to the point where I just sit staring and dont want to get off the sofa. Nine years ago, exercise got me revved up and made me feel brilliant, now I dont see the point- I have rock solid muscle under a ton of fat, and I'm tired all the time. Also for the last nine years I have taken a two litre bottle of water everywhere with me like a kids comfort blanket because I am always thirsty, and the thirst fluctuates. That bottle gets refilled night and day, and my mouth is still dry!I have been known to down almost the entire bottle at one sitting. Anyway- to close- I am going to the doctor's next Monday to tell them I'm off the pills, and why, and to demand to be taken seriously, and to get evry kind of test done - even a test for my hair if thats a thing- to make sure there is no lasting dammage! Do not take this medicine if you value your health, because when it goes wrong doctors will accuse you of being a panicky nervouse person and offer you anti-depressants, and send you on your way, assuming you read the side effects list first and developed symptoms five seconds later, because you are a hypercondriac. Oh also I have had upper respiritory inflamation problems for years, every october since I started this medicine. It once lasted five months! I cannot believe I didn't read the side effects list years ago!

Very worthwhile web page. I merely got practically nothing to do hence I'm just killing time exploring the world wide web and I find that I have discovered some incredibly practical site. Thanks

I've been taking Omeprazole for 2 weeks and I am constantly hungry and gaining weight, this side effect isn't listed on the leaflet, has anyone else experienced this

Sat, 19 Jan 2013

I took Omeprazole for one month. I had a burning sensation on my scalp and light chest pains. Also my hair got thinner. I stopped taking Omeprazole after I realized that these symptoms could be caused by Omeprazole. Two days later I felt perfectly fine again.

Thu, 03 Jan 2013

I had gastroenteritis three times and I lost my voice, I had a severe bout of hives and my side of face to become numb, which seemed to link to neurological probs, or that my body was reacting. I was put on this medication 3 weeks ago. within about a week I had breathing difficulties and hives again. I have had some spasms in my throat and also some other muscle spams. I went to my doctor, due that I was concerned that it was a problem with immune system and due that my heart rate was high and my diastolic reading was very high. She starting to state about anxiety. I was sent away with another prescription of the same medication. Somehow I don't think I will be getting it.

Thinking of changing my doctor and try and find someone that will send me to a specialist to get this sorted, without the anxiety rubbish. Yes it is causing anxiety, but, it is due that I know something is seriously wrong. This medication has just made things worse, I think. My concern is that they do not know the side effects of the medications they precribe and are too ready to blame me for worrying.

before i started taking 40/mg Omeprazole per day for GERD/Helicobacter treatment i was a healthy, fit person for 30 years old. cholesterol levels were low, bp was 118/78, resting heart rate around 50-52bpm. 12 months  later, my HDL cholesterol levels are 7.0 , bp was 150/100 , resting heart rate 78-84bpm, i have strong palpitations usually after main meals and around 9pm-12am , my eyes have gradually reddened and become veiny, i feel weak and also pretty depressed/anxious about the whole health problems i am experiencing... I've tried coming off Omeprazole but i am physically dependant on it, my body goes into pain/anxiety state when i tried stopping. The gastritis returns and aggresive GERD re-appears, even if i just try dropping the dose the same happens. The pharmaceutical business has a hold of me around the you-know-whats!!! I'm waiting to find out the results of a celiacs test and i also suspect i have b12 deficiency... Maybe its all conicidental, but i've really plummeted, health-wise, since starting PPI treatment..

I was prescribed Omeprazole (40mg per day) nearly a month ago for one month for a duodenal ulcer but stopped taking it a couple of days ago. A few days ago I started to suffer from quite severe joint pain and stiffness mainly in my knees and hips to the point where I was/am finding it difficult to walk. I also started with night sweats, headaches and just generally feeling unwell. I've decided I'm better just sticking to a non-inflammatory diet and to natural remedies like licorice tea and manuka honey rather than this questionable drug.  I've been prescribed it before but not at such a high dose. I had side effects then but not as bad as this time.  Paul
