Pradaxa Fall Reviews

Mon, 30 Apr 2012

Spouse, age 85, successfully on Coumadin for atrial fib. Switched to Pradaxa by cardiologist because it might be more effective. Ache in hips and calves. Loose stool and diarrhea started. The last two weeks, diarrhea especially bad--continuous--no bowel control. Confusion. Could not remember where the bathrooms were. Black stool deposited on carpets on way to find someplace to have a bowel movement. Several Falls--fortunately CT scan indicated no brain bleed. April 21, weak, dehydrated, did not want to eat or take liquids. Felt there would be an irreversible downward trend--so I took her to ER. Low oxygen level, low hemoglobin, low potassium, low iron, elevated blood sugar. Blood in the stool. Hospital physician stopped Pradaxa. Have not resumed taking this drug. Intend on having her return to Coumadin. Meantime, April 26: stool on the way to relative normalcy.

I am pharmacist and my father in law developed the rectal bleed and wanted to see if others had similar problem. thanks for sharing with me as this is very helpful in me couseling my patients on this new med. He was on coumadin with no problem but has Fallen twice in 2 weeks and has the rectal bleed.

Fri, 30 Nov 2012

In Oct 2011 ny Dad age 79 was prescribed Pradaxa because he asked his Dr. if he take it for the convenience (no blood draws) He was well maintained on Coumadin.....Ambulatory, always strong, ready to jump in the chemo chair and flirt with Nurses. My Dad was on Chemo for Lung Cancer, had COPD, 3 bouts of Pnuemonia in that previous 18 months, vascular disease (many operations) history of bleeding..

Now I know he should not have been prescribed this new medication that that cost 50 times what coumadin does...He died 6 weeks later, He vomited blood, prob half of what he had in his body in the sink and on the kitchen floor, and he was gone in 40 seconds. But, he was sick from from about a week after taking it..weakness, Falls, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, high heart rate (160) slept 14 hours a day. We reported all this to his Oncologist who is ironically a HEMOTOLIGIST also, a big wig at Alta Bates Hospital. No, its not the Pradaxa he said.... Doing research I think it was a bad drug but I think 150 mg 2x a day was too much and it was an overdose for someone his age, with stage 1 liver diease, chemo, always had low hemogloben, Iron levels etc... Yesterday was the one year anniversary of my Dad's passing.

Sun, 17 Jul 2011
Have been on Pradaxa 150mg for a year and metoprolol. Lots of bruising, sleepy. Nasty Fall, landed on pacemaker. bruising and lots of bleeding on knee, elbow and arm. Prefer to coumadin and frequent blood tests
