Levaquin administered by IV report #SELF-2503
Female patient reported the following Levaquin administered by IV side effect(s):Tingling, itching scalp, then tingling and itching spreading to face, neck, shoulders and torso. Broke out in red splotches. I believe the doctor actually said \"hives.\"
I was given Levaquin by IV prior to undergoing lithotripsy with general anesthesia. Within a few minutes my scalp began to tingle and itch, and then my face, neck, and shoulders began to break out in red splotches or hives. I was still in the room waiting to be taken to surgery, so when the nurse came back in the room I told her I was having this spreading tingling and itching. The doctor immediately ordered IV Benadryl and the symptoms soon cleared up completely. The subsequent surgery that same day was basically uneventful, and I did not notice any other adverse effects due to the allergic reaction I had before the surgery.
Event date: Friday November 3rd 12:00:00 AM
Dosage: Unknown
Frequency: One time by IV
Age: 53
Weight: 220
Other medications: Unknown (whatever they gave me prior to surgery).
Diagnosis: I was about to undergo removal of a stent and then lithotripsy so I guess they wanted to head off a possible urinary tract infection.
Pre-existing conditions: I was undergoing lithotripsy; I had been having kidney and bladder problems for several months due to uric acid kidney stones, which was the reason for the surgery -- removal of stent and then the lithotripsy to destroy the kidney stones. No other known drug allergies. Was not pregnant at the time. Not a smoker or drinker. I have been told that I have slightly elevated liver enzymes, but do not notice any everyday problems from that.
