Levaquin report #SELF-3673
Male patient reported the following Levaquin side effect(s):extreme exhaustion; fever; night sweats; petechia on feet, legs, face, hands, buttock, in mouth, lips.....ect.ect.ect
dx w/ upper respiratory infection.given Levaquin. After 3 dose; pt showed signs of swollen ankles, petechia all over legs,feet, hands, face. (discontinued use after 3rd dose)next day, awoke with large blood blister on lower lip. The following morning more blood ulcerations inside of mouth on gums,cheeks, tongue. Coughing up blood and spontaneously bleeding from nose and mouth. taken to the Emergency room 2 days after discontinued use. Admitted with a platelet count of 2 (2000) critical risk of bleeding out and bleeding into his brain. 5 days in the hospital; 3 platelet transfusions: Transfusion 1: Platelets jumped from a 2 to a 19 then next morning they dropped to a 6 Transfusion 2: Platelets jumped from a 6 to a 12; the next blood work up the next morning showed a drop to 4. Transfusion 3: Platelets jumped from 4 to 23; next blood work up (8 hours later) dropped back down to 17.

Was intervention required to prevent damage? Yes tranfusion of platelets to prevent bleeding to death and bleeding out in to the brain; hospitalized on bleed precaution
Other serious medical events? Yes muscle joint pain, no energy; 3 tranfusions, ulcerations in mouth and lips; spontaneous bleed from nose and mouth
