Female patient reported the following Beano side effect(s):hot, red, itchy rash (urticaria) I took pictures
I took 2 tablets of Beano ca. 3 pm on 11-30-2009. Approximately 4 hours later I had an itch on my neck and one on the crook of my right elbow but thought nothing of it. By 10 pm the itch on my neck had not stopped but from constantly touching it although not scratching there was a slight red mark. When I got up around 3:30 am to use the bathroom I felt itchy on my body, examined myself in the mirror and found red areas as much as 8 inches square on my waist and back, some of it raised as if I had been bitten many times by an insect, others were long weals. I also had what appeared to be scratches on my arms and chest, and a large raised spot at the top of my buttocks. I changed into a slick nightgown which helped and went back to sleep. When I awoke around 8 am the large red area was gone but there were new large red raised itchy spots and new \"scratches\" on my arms, chest, back and neck, and one huge raised spot just below the bottom of my left buttock. As Beano had been the only thing that had been different I checked for side effects on the Internet and found that others had also reported uticaria although it appears to be rather rare. I treated the itch with spray Benadryl which helped, but there are still new spots coming up and I will go to the pharmacy and get some oral antihystamines. I will not take any more Beano and hope that will take care of the itch and raised, red spots. If it continues I will need to see a physician.
