I had scaling and planing and several cavities filled over two weeks and 5 appointments. Fillings included 5 on the lower left and 1 on the uppoer back molar. My dentist mentioned at the last filling appoinment that because I had so much done that my mouth might be extra sensitive and to use Sensodyne to help with it. A few days later I decided to try it to see if it helped with the little twinges I had here and there on the lower left. I noticed a numbing effect right away and thought, "Oh ok, this works like orajel maybe but also cleans my teeth". That night I had increased sensitivty, it seemed to continue for a few days. At this point I thought, "Wow, my teeth are more sensitive after using sensodyne...it couldn't be from the toothpase though...my teeth may just still be in shock since scaling and planing can cause sensitivity." I started using it 2-3 times a day then...the pain increased. I thought, "Good thing I am using Sensodyne! I miss my cavities...I wasn't in this much pain before I had fillings! I better use sensodyne cause it will ease my pain." I looked up tooth pain after fillings and was sure that I had extreme sensitivity because of all of the white fillings I had, or that I had TMD from having the back tooth worked on, since the pain didn't start until after that. The pain was now whenever I ate, drank, brushed my teeth, and would wake me up. It would radiate from my ear, down my jaw line, to about the middle of my chin. I couldn't pinpoint a tooth so I really thought it was my jaw. But then I realized it didn't hurt when I yawned. This is now 2+ weeks since I started using the toothpaste. I went back to the dentist last week and he prescribed me a Medrol dose pack to help with inflammation. He said if it didn't help then I would need a root canal on one of my teeth that has a deeper cavity suggesting the root was inflammed. I was in immediate relief. Then I would brush my teeth and have twinges of pain. By day 3 and now tapering the doses off I brushed my teeth and had immediate jaw/tooth pain again. DING DING. "Google, tooth sensitivity after sensodyne"..."HOLY CRAP!" Are you kidding me?! All the dots fit. I know I had a lot of work done, I know sometimes you can require a root canal after a filling...but... I didnt have PAIN until I started using sensodyne..teeth I didnt even have fillings on began to be sensitive (even without drinking, or eating), I had raw feeling gums, headaches (though probably from the pain in my jaw). I stopped using the sensodyne 3 days ago now. Of course my Medrol pack is done now as well. I am hoping I caught it in time and the Medrol had a chance to improve the inflammation since I was in essence still causing inflammation. I have a little bit of an ache here and there as of yet but I will take that any day over the pain I was in! Needless to say..the other tubes of Sensodyne when in the trash. I think there should be a clearer warning on the packaging or an insert should be made.
