VARICELLA (VARIVAX) problem was reported from PA on Feb 08, 2007. Male patient , child 9 years of age, was vaccinated with VARICELLA (VARIVAX) on Feb 08, 2007. "APPROXIMATELY 22 HOURS AFTER VACCINATION, THE PTS MOTHER NOTED A RASH ON THE PTS LEGS. INITIALLY THE RASH WAS ITCHY. We saw the pt in the office about 24 hours after the dose was given and he had scattered approx 5mm red papules on his trunk. They had white halos surrounding the erythema. No vesicles or scabs were noted. No fever. The child had no further itching. the child had had a varivax vaccine on 5/14/98 at 12 months of age without any problem. But I do note in his chart that he was treated for a diagnosis of allergic respiratory symptoms one week after this initial varicella vaccine on 5/21/98. He was noted to have rhonchi and a pink right TM. He was treated with rondec syrup and given albuterol syrup prn.". . eczema. Patient recovered.

"Information has been received from a physician concerning a 5 year old male, with no medical history and no allergies, who in January 2003, was vaccinated with a first 0.5 ml SQ dose of Varivax vaccine (lot#654128/1147F). There was no concomitant medication. It was reported that the patient received a first dose of Havrix vaccine in January 2007. On 27-JAN-2007 the patient developed facial swelling and difficulty breathing. The physician administered epinephrine, Benadryl, and two breathing treatments in the office. The patient was prescribed a course of steroids and fully recovered after two days of treatment, on 29-JAN-2007. No product quality complain was involved. No other information was provided. The reporter considered the patient's experiences to be immediately life-threatening, disabling and an other important medical event. Additional information has been requested.". UNK. NONE. GA is about 24-25 weeks and has had no prenatal care. Dr. Young advised patient on theorictal risk, counselled about medicine labels for pregnancy precautions. "Administered Varicella approx 4:15pm 1-2 min later pt c/o sore throat, hands and throat mom reported yes when asked is having difficulty breathing, began to faint, color pale, diaphoretic, layer flat, not responding, aroused by ammonia inhalant but mental status altered, remained diaphoretic and pale. Administered 03 ml Epi SQ followed by 6ml Benadryl IM. 4:20 pm B/P 80/60 P 70 4:25pm, B/P P 72 pt responded to meds, mom called 911 at beginning of event. Paramedics arrived around 4:30pm transported via ambulance appeared stable. TC mom child back in school today, at ER till 10pm, DX allergic reaction VX anxiety/syncope, kept till 10pm Tue Epi wore off. Discharged to home with 2 day prescription for Prednisone, prescribed Epi Pen and mom told to observe 2 wks, saw PCP Dr 2/18 who prescribed Epi Pen for school too, advised no more varicella vaccine.". PT returned to clinic c/o difficulty breathing was retracting and exhaling forcefully. O2 sat 98% coarse BS. Given albuterol TX with improvement in exam few minutes later c/o inability to blow nose. Nasal passages were swollen shut. Given one dose of Benadryl with some improvement. Referred to children's emergency for observation. O2 sat remained 95 - 99%. Pt has a completely normal exam 15 min prior to episode before vaccine given.. Griseofulvin. "Eczema, ADD". Patient recovered.

VARICELLA (VARIVAX) problem was reported from CO on Feb 28, 2007. Female patient , child 4 years of age, was vaccinated with VARICELLA (VARIVAX) on Feb 22, 2007. "When pt received her chicken pox vaccine the first few nights she was very restless in her sleep waking up crying as in pain putting her hand up toward her head. In the day I felt her neck and the glands on each side felt like hard rocks. On Feb 7th in the evening she felt itchy and uncomfortable. On the morning of Feb 8th you could see she had broken out with chickenpox on her stomach, under arm, back, legs, arms. She also had a large rectangular welt on her lower left back. Feb 9th new spots on stomach,neck, arms, scalp, hands. Large spot in genital area so it burns when she urinates. Feb 10th broke out more. Feb 11 just a few more breakouts. She at least ended up with 60 spots. During the break out time in the evening or during the night she would be screaming and crying in pain that her throat hurt. It was extremely difficult to give her a drink or pain medicine because it hurt so bad. She didn't want to swallow. Eating citrus bothered her also. On Monday Feb 12 Took her to Dr at advanced pediatrics. She said she had a significant reaction to the shot and would turn in a form to the health department. Pt had complained of her ear the day before. She confirmed an ear infection but since pt was not running a fever she said to wait a few days before antibiotics to see if she still complained of the pain and had a fever. Pt did not complain the rest of the week about her ear and did not run a fever so I didn't need to give prescribed medicine. The doctor felt the ear infection was part of the chickenpox virus she was sick with.". NONE. Erythromycin allergy. Patient recovered.

Pt seen 3/12/07 for fall with laceration on R ant tibia.. Ibuprofen. In clinic that day for steri strip application to laceration.. Patient recovered.
